Friendly Reminder of Hornets & Yellow Jackets Around Goat Toys - Enjoy our fun story!

So yesterday I mowed some of the pasture and then figured I'd move the one wooden square they lay on from the one corner to where the big 53 inch cable spool was - it was falling apart and I figured how hard would that be to get out when I wasn't feeling great and the tail end of a hot day -nightmare!

Here's your reminder to check your goat's toys and platforms so you aren't in the position I was in last night! Oh yeah, have allergy medicine on hand, too!

Girls came over with me, I flipped it and I don't know what I was doing - holding it up or what but I noticed Nyx snorting and then my leg hurt and looked down and there was a hornet on me while looking over quickly and seeing a nest that was under the platform, then Nyx took off running as Echo stamped her hind feet and then we all took off running! That hurt!

The girls were rubbing their noses, so I think they got it there. So I ran up and got the allergy medicine - Echo stepped in a nest a year or two ago and that's what was recommended on here - she was fine. Came down and gave them each one with some animal crackers. Seem to be okay, I bet it stings if they got it on their face, as I can still feel it on my leg!
OK, so I told them let me go see what's going on over there. Well, when I was in the house I saw I only had a tiny bit in the hornet spray, but didn't really want to spray that stuff in the pasture. The girls kept trying to come with me and I had fears the hornets would look over and swarm us like a movie nightmare!

I figured I'd call my brother and see if I should knock the nest open with a rake - thankfully it was a chilly day and almost dark. He was sorting jewelry for the flea market (really) and wasn't really listening or helpful. I said, I'm going to use the big extension cord as a rope and pull it out of the pasture and deal with it. I said, if you don't hear from me, come pick me up out of the yard tomorrow. He didn't even say yes. Nice.

So out I go with the key to the gate, the extension cord. I got the girls tied up at the other end and went to wrap the cord. Of course here comes Daisy the Cat, she jumps right up ON IT! I yelled and ran at her to get OFF!! She took off. Got the cord wrapped around - 100 footer I was complaining all I had earlier this week when goat ate the barn fan extension cord - and started pulling. Let's just say even with the mowing I did, pulling a wooden square up a slight hill in tall grass, worried your are going to get stung, is not fun! But I did it! Got the damn thing out, grabbed Daisy when she came up to it again and put her in. Grabbed the can and gave it a squirt. Grabbed Cesar Cat and put him in when he tried to go mess with it. Got girls loose and put everyone up for the night.

This morning both girls were okay, but when I went to where the platform was, I still saw some flying insects, maybe yellow jackets. I had one of the old wooden cable tops that I laid in the grass last year for them - bad idea! Looks like there's yellow jackets that made a nest in there, so I'll need to get that sprayed later, too.

Last year a spool finally broke and there was a big nest in it. Luckily nobody got stung. Also be careful looking in heat lamp fixtures for nests. I went to take one down for summer storage and got stung on my hand three times. They’d built a nest between the bulb and shade. That was no fun…🥺

This is the 3rd year they have done this.
All advice welcome!

From what I read the only thing that scares wasp and yellow jackets are Hornets. Some sware by filling a brown lunch bag up with paper and hanging it where you do not want wasps or y. Jackets. They think its a hornets nest and stay clear of it. Worth a try

Worth a shot! For some reason this year all our yellow buckets seem to be magnets for wasps and yellowjackets…I worry whenever the littles go for a drink but I can’t get rid of 4 big buckets they’ve gotten pricey lately.

I've noticed more nests around the house and barn this year than ever before. I kept killing them when they were just started in barn and they quit, but obviously they could have went to the platform, which is about 50-100 feet from barn. I've weed wacked around there before and nothing. It's about the size of a softball. it's just sitting in the middle of the yard right now, cord still on it. It's another cool day today, so I'll try and give the nest a squirt after chicks go in.

I learned last year to look at tree limbs before I pulled them down to get leaves for girls. I really lucked out, got stung on forehead and even by the eye, but not on it.

I wonder if the pest service I use would come deal with them? I'll see what I can do, but man, the peace of mind of not having to worry about these stupid things!

I just gotta sneak over to the tractor and hang a bag on there...
Right now I am trying to hit the airborne ones with spray, I have to kill most of those before I can start unbolting the trim & panels to get to the nest.
Like I need another reason to hide from tractor work in the heat!

We have lots of red wasps around here. I have seen a HUGE hornet but that’s it. No yellow jackets. We do have a big hornet nest (like, a real one that wasn’t occupied anymore) we could hang up where we are having trouble with wasps and see if that helps.

Every summer I would get yellow jackets bad around here. Like bad enough I would get a bed trap and put a hot dog in it and I would have to dump it every day. Once I got turkeys that seemed to take care of the issue. The last few years I’ve only seen a few and that’s been it.

Wow, turkey's will take care of them?! My brother and his wife have a bunch and she tried to talk me into getting one, but didn't take them now as I have 3 chicks.

And the traps work? I think I bought one last year, one of the bag and toss ones. I could put that outside the fence near where that cable top is, wouldn't hurt. Great idea!

We have them so bad around here. When we first moved here, we were constantly getting stung. But we haven’t noticed much this year. We still see them but aren’t invaded like years before. I guess it must be the turkeys. I don’t see them eating them, but something has decreased the population.

I’m glad your goats ended up being ok. It’s a great reminder to be cautious. I’m usually fairly safe because I am worried about finding a venomous snake in things like that, but I still get careless and in a hurry sometimes.

They can be awful, as well as bee’s.

I get these

The scent thing is junk. I get a hot dog or some chicken fat and put in and that really gets them to come into it. But you have to put it WAY away from any place you don’t want them.
Yes the turkeys have been taking care of them. I had a single Turkey some years ago and she couldn’t keep up with all the bees but she would chase them down to eat them. They like to peck and eat anything odd looking. So when I went bonkers getting these turkeys and the bees stopped being a problem I remembered that Turkey chasing them down to eat them. So it’s got to be them that is keeping them under control. Or maybe they put off a scent they don’t like (joking lol) but whatever is going on I sure like it lol bees and ants I swear they go out of their way to find and attack me. I will be standing with 3 other people and it will be me that gets covered in ants or stung by a bee lol I joke and say it’s because of all the soda I drink

We have those little yellow paper wasps here - I think they might be the same aggressive little buggers as your yellow jackets, though I’m not sure. The lady I work with hung one of those paper bags on her porch but still gets paper wasps nesting there, so it doesn’t seem to work on them. It would sure be nice if it did! I hate those things.

I’m assuming they’re pollinators and an important part of the ecosystem... but they’re so MEAN!! And I think I might legitimately have a phobia. I’m absolutely terrified of them.

We spray them with a dish soap/water mix here. I’m afraid to use the poison sprays with my chickens and goats around. Soapy water doesn’t kill them as fast as the poison, but since they end up just as dead, I figure it’s all good.

I might have to look into getting some turkeys though! That sounds pretty awesome.
