So, my husband finally agreed to let me get a 4th goat (all I had to do was not make him help me wash the goats-wish I had known it would be that easy).

So, I already know that 3 of them are to be milking/show goats, Jenny the Saanen, hopefully her daughter, if not, another Saanen, and Taloula the Nubian who's coming in March that I posted about last month.

The question is, what to do with Maverick? I'd like to replace him with a Saanen buck and AI Taloula, but I don't know if I really want to try to AI anyone this year. I'd love to have a buck like Jenny's sire, but odds are I'm not going to be that lucky, so should I give up on buying a buck, add a 4th doe and AI everyone, or find a good Saanen buck?

(If I get a 4th doe, I am SO getting a milk machine. I don't think my hands can handle that....)

AI isnt real effective when you are first learning so you will need a back up buck for those that dont take with the AI. Once you get better with it then straight AI is possible

I forgot to add I will have the option to breed back Taloula to the blue roan buck she's bred to this year, so long as she's clear on CAE, but I can take the course at REI and try that with her first if I want, I just don't want to waste hundreds on it not being successful. The saanens, though...if I don't get a buck for them it's straight AI unless I inbreed them back to Jenny's sire, who may not even be around next year.

Anyone know someone with a good Saanen buck? Or maybe someone who wants an Alpine?

Oh yeah, and if I want to get really lazy (and expensive...) I can board does at REI and have them bred by them with straws I provide.

This is just kind of my first real year with actually breeding goats, and trying to plan what I want to do. I know I want Saanens (easier to win classes with them, at least around here), but I do want the Nubian, too, just for a guaranteed market for kids.

Yup Stacy is right, (a person speaking from experience) I wouldn't do staight AI until you really know what your doing. But, if you want to anyways, I would use cheaper semen. I am still not using my VERY expensive semen until I get real confident.
