Give CDT toxoid?

169 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
I have a baby goat no older than a month he is kind of an orphan been bottle feeding him slowly gradually bringing his amount of food up as he got older he usually is very playful and bouncing around but just a little bit ago I found him just sitting in the corner not even hungry for his bottle, this morning he was not like this. He and his twin sister both recieved their first cdt antitoxin shots around 1 and 1/2 weeks ago. He is not dehydrated so I think he may have overeaten and now has enterotoxemia. Also he flinches a bit and is uncomfortable when I touch is stomach. Do you think that I should give him the toxoid.

CD&T Booster should be 21 days after the first shot.
Get his temp ...check his famacha.

How much does he weigh and how much is he being fed...as well as what milk?

He is being fed milk replacer (ultra 24) about 20 ounces per day split between three feedings his temp is 102.2 and his lower eyelid is a pale pink he weighs about 15 pounds he also is getting worse about me touching his belly and instead of just kind of standing around he is sitting in a corner of the pen and doesn't really want to get up. I was only asking if I should give him the toxoid because he had the antitoxin only around a week ago and I don't know how long until it wears off and I was told that they will counteract with each other and the animal will die.

Oh..i miss read about the antitoxin. I thouggtbthey got their first cdT. The antitoxin stays in the system about 10 days. Some feel its safe to give the toxoid any time...but i would hold off until he is well. Not good to vaccinate when not feeling well.

For his tummy ache..i would stop reopacer...give his tummy some rest to digest. Feed electrolytes in place of replacer. You can give another cd antitoxin shot or a dose of Milk of magnesia to help if there is toxins builidng. He may have grown sensitive to the replacer so once he feels better i would switch to whole cows milk and see if he does better. A pinch of baking soda in first bottle and probiotics in his last.

Best wishes

Would just one shot help him fight it off if he has cdt or should I give him another shot of the antitoxin or toxoid?
If hes struggling in his gut..which sound like he is..a shot of b complex and cd Antitoxin is best. Not the toxoid. Then in 10 days or so..if hes feeling better you can vaccinate him if you choose.

I think you may have antitoxin and toxoid mixed up

Toxoid is what goats are vaccinated with

Antitoxin is what you give if they are sick

Might be a good idea to switch to whole milk as suggested above… just in case 😊
