Good morning,
UPDATED PHOTOS. Black Goat is the one i am concern about his name is pepper.

I recently brought home three Nigerian dwarf goats. It has been great but one of them the black one in the picture fur feels I don’t know how to describe it but nasty and doesn’t feel smooth and fur shiny like the other two. He just feels dirty, I plan on giving him a bath this Sunday when weather warms up. Any recommendations on what to use for shampoo and conditioner? I planned on using little dawn blue bottle but I am concern about stripping all his natural oils. Is there a conditioner we can put in after to help?

I don’t think he needs a bath. He looks mineral deficient. Do you have a good loose mineral out for them? If you don’t, Sweetlix Meat Maker minerals are really good. If his fur is rough he may also need a copper bolus. 1 gram per 22lbs. @happybleats @NigerianDwarfOwner707

Yup I agree..good loose minerals and some copper should help quite a bit. Copper deficiency cam cause rough, coarse thinning hair, can cause color to fade...hair tips may hook looking a bit singed.

Have you had a fecal done for worm and coccidia counts? The posture in the picture, tail and head down, slightly hunch, gives me the impression the goat isn't feeling well. Is the goat itchy, scratching or biting along his back? Do you see any signs of lice?

Good questions and suggestions.

Thank you for the response. Yes we have the recommended Minerals available to them. How much he is getting I don’t know. I see them occasionally licking it. Is there a way I can make sure he is getting more to see if it clears up on its own? We have Sweetlix meat maker minerals and we keep it clean no poop in it yet. We have a another goat that needs grain and I know he is in there eating that as well. The grain is Homefresh goat feed blue bag. Thank you for your help.

I have not done a fecal testing done. Poop is the same and appears to be normal. I think some of the characteristics you had mentioned just was the picture. I am going to get few more and will share with you. His behavior appears fine he runs around and jumps everywhere with his brother. No sign of lice. I will keep an eye out for these behaviors and signs tho. Thank you. I will respond in a little bit with some more pictures.

I would definitely say he needs copper bolus and I noticed his nose looks hairless in a few pics. It could either be dirty or it’s the lighting but I’m pretty sure that means he needs zinc too. @happybleats knows more about zinc than I do.

When you move goats to a new home, give a poop sample to your vet. Stress can cause a parasite and or worm bloom so it’s wise to get a baseline.

Can I mix the minerals with the grain and feed him seperatly to make sure he is getting the proper amount? i am feeding them sweet lix meat maker for minerials and home fresh goat feed blue bag for grain which they get into because we have a girl goat. but the boys ofcourse like it and get some of it. I could defintly mix some in my hand and hand feed him to try to boast the amount of minerals he is taking in and see if that helps. I just want to make sure i can mix it like that or if there is a different way you would recommend.
I wpuldnt top dress feed with minerals. They should have access free choice. We also use sweet lix meat maker but also have to copper bolus. Try copper and givetime for that to work.

Thank you. I will visit my local feed store see what they have. If i can not get any today and have to wait is there something i can do in the meantime or is there anything on amazon that you can recommend for me to try to get some in him ASAP. Should i give some to the other goats even tho I do not see the same symptoms? Thank you for your help.

Yes, that copper bolus will work. On the ingredient label, the UltraCruz brand has 3.4 gram copper oxide per 4 gram total weight capsule. Since the dosage is 22 pounds per gram, one capsule will treat 74.8 or 74 pounds. 1/2 of the capsule will treat 37.4 or 37 pounds. Do you know what Pepper weighs?

No i do not. He was born April 29th. but I would defintly be leaning on the half capsule size if i was recommend these. I can also attempt to weigh him, we have a vet scheduled to come out Aug 10th to adminster second CDT shot and possibly get a weight then if she has portable scale we could weigh them on. i am going to ask the breeder if she happen to take his weight recently. Could i play it safe and assume a half a pill until i get further details on this for future dosages? it looks like this is something ill only be giving him few times a year. Now can i give it to my other goats that seem to be fine? Does it hurt them to have to much?
I was also thinking 1/2 capsule or a tad under. I am not proficient at guessing weight, though without seeing the goat in person, approximately 25 pounds would be a guesstimate. If you have a bathroom scale, you could hold Pepper and subtract the human weight. Do you have a bolus gun/applicator? Another way of administering the copper would be to hide the wire particles in a favorite treat. As examples, a fig newton cookie could be cut open through the middle lengthwise, pour the particles onto the bottom half, and gently press the top back on. A banana could be scoped out or cut in half lengthwise, add the particles replug the hole or gently press the pieces back together. Just be sure the goat will eat the treat before adding the particles so you won't be wasting a bolus.

Signs of copper deficiency would be course and rough fur, especially on the neck. The neck fur would have a slight appearance of being bent, singed or hooked on the tip ends. Also, the tip end of the tail would begin to lose hair and there would be a gap in the fullness, giving the tail hair the look of a fish tail. The color of a goat would begin to fade and with black goats, the rear hip area would have rust colored fur in an irregular shaped spot on both sides.

Yes, it could hurt a goat if giving excessive copper supplementation over a long period of time. It's called copper toxicity.

As for the other goats, check their fur for coarseness, the ends of their tails, discoloration of the fur, and the hair on the neck.

With goats, some may need copper supplementation every 3 (three) months and others may only need a copper bolus every 4 (four), 5 (five) or 6 (six) months and so forth. Rule of thumb would be at least 3 (three) months between supplementing.

Thank you so much for all that useful information.

Course and wire hair defiantly is a good description of how he feels. Thank you for the tip about the banana. i was reading about some people saying they use a marshmallow. i will try one or the other before adding the copper.

I will get a scale.

Thank you again so much for your help with this.
