Grinding teeth

569 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  GoofyGoat
I found a Kid this evening that was cold and could not move. I brought her in, wrapped her up in a warm towel and about an hour later tried to get her to suck on a bottle. She would only grind her teeth, yawn and raise her upper lip.
I was able to get some milk replacer down her but she still will not try to suck. She is peeing fine and has not pooped I guess because she has nothing to process. We have lost about 15 head so far out of about 40.
what would cause her to just grind and not suck?

Welcome to TGS.
what kind of shelters do you have?
How old is the kid?

A cold kid is usually a starving kid. It’s good you get her warmed up, but did you take her temperature before you tried to feed her? Her temp needs to be between 101.5*-103.5*F that’s normal.
Most goats do not do well on milk replacers, it’s better to use whole cows milk from the grocery store.
The milk also has to be at 101* for baby to digest it well. NEVER feed a cold goat it can become toxic in their system

You can give baby a warm water enema use a couple drops of dawn dish soap in a 1/4c of very warm water and using a 3cc leur slip syringe slowly squirt in to rectum then massage her tummy repeat as needed.

Such significant losses in your herd must be heartbreaking. What breed of goats do you have? What do you feed? What loose minerals do you use? I see you’re from Texas too, it’s been a brutal winter and pneumonia is an issue, did you vaccinate for it this year?

Babies need moms colostrum with the first 12 hours. Make sure her temp is at least 191.5 rectally, milk out mom and feed it back to her. If she won’t suck you may have to tube feed or by syringe- make sure she swallows and doesn’t aspirate using the syringe method.

I agree to milk mom and give it to the kid.

I don’t agree to make sure temp is 191.5, hopefully that was a typo error.

I agree to tube the kid if the kid won’t take a bottle or syringe feeding( without needle).

Grinding teeth is discomfort or pain.
Hopefully the kid didn’t get freeze bit.

I believe she means 101.5

Believe baby to have gotten colostrum from young mother. She was cleaned off and probably 3-4 days old. Goats are huddled under barn and scattered so could not tell exactly who mother was. Too cold and baby was too weak to make a sound.
I have never taken a goats temp, been raising them for over 25 years and usually have one or two that I have to feed out but this year we have had 8. I have always had good luck saving the babies. Mothers are knocking the twin off. We have not had a 1/2 rain here in over 3 months at our farm.
we have Spanish/Boer mix. this morning the baby peed but had horrible squirts of mainly water. Would not let me put nipple in mouth. Our go to is kaopectate for this issue. I was going to get colostrum with electrolytes this morning.
What do you feed moms? Do they get a good loose mineral? Do you supplement copper and selenium? Do you give kids selenium and B Complex when they are born?

If you have lost 15 out of 40 something is going on. Did all the kids that passed have scours? Mom should be out there some place with a larger udder and yelling for her kid. I would go and see if you can find which one she is and make sure she doesn’t have mastitis or anything else off about her udder.
Does this babies back side look like she had scours before you took her in? Any poop sticking to her or crusty hair on the back legs?

Are you feeding free choice hay? There’s just nothing but bare ground where we are from the drought. I’ve had to put protein pails out this year too because the hay we’ve been getting is not so great. Even though I feed both alfalfa and costal free choice, they lost condition and started looking rough. It’s been a bad year with the shipping and weather problems, the good quality were used to is just not there.
How are your goats FAMACHAS?
