How far above the straw bedding do you place a heat lamp for ducklings? I am worried about fire. Thanks!
high enough to where the ducklings cant touch it at all.. I'd say anywhere from 12-20inches.. make sure its secure! the school didnt secure the light for their turkeys properly and it fell and several caught on fire
You want the temp at ground level to read 90 degrees the first week I believe, then you begin raising the lamp and cooling it down 5 degrees a week. As long as it is secured, i.e. with wire not just the clamp, and can't touch anything, you should be okay. I hang mine over brooders, with a metal guard, with wire, not touching anything and do well.
Thanks for the help! I will sleep better tonight...I wrapped the cord several times throungh the cage so it is secure. I am already in love with my ducklings so I want everything to be perfectly warm and safe for them.
