Help!! Baby Goat Troubles

1883 Views 26 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
One of our doe kids, born last Monday (so 5 days old) has been struggling from the start
Her twin brother is fat and energetic as ever. Kidding went well. Mama is good & healthy.
When she was born, she was about 4lbs, while he was probably double (ha. Piggy)
Vet cannot see her until Monday so I thought I'd get on here.
- She still takes a bottle.
Last Monday she was 'fine' but standing off alone, shivering and acting weird. Normally I don't bring kids in the house but brought her in. Wednesday scours started so we stopped milk & gave her electrolytes & peptobismol.
Then she just stopped pooping at all so Friday she was given an enema. (Most of this^ was per vets suggestion)
That helped but she only pooped once. This morning she did too - no enema. Half scours/half normal.
She seems lethargic. Mainly laying down. Weak. Every now and then she kind of shakes. Odd.
Temp is fine.

Wow sorry this is long!!!! If anyone has thoughts please put them down here!! Hope I covered everything...lol!

Is she getting enough milk? I would start with B complex and some Nutridrench.

I think she is. 2-4oz 4ish times/day. Plus electrolytes.

B Complex is 4.5cc/100 pounds. But won't hurt them if you give too much. How much does she weigh now? Her current weight will help you know if she has been getting enough milk. Give a squirt of Nutridrench.

Ok. She's 5.4lbs, so not really gaining but her stomach feels full usually..so wondering if internal digestive problem or something
Only pooped once yesterday with enema. This AM on her own & tonight with enema
I had a kid this year that started out fine then got scours. Thought they were milk scours at first, and it was on and off (she had to come in the house a couple of times). She wasn’t gaining like she should and felt bony. At about a week old she had a little blood in her stool so I called my vet and he gave me antibiotics for E. coli. She did well after the antibiotics and is now bouncing around like her siblings. They’re significantly bigger than her but she’s gaining at her own pace and no longer feels bony.

How is she today??
No improvement at all. Gave nutridrench and b complex last night.
Haven't heard from vet still.

Does sound similar. What antibiotics did he prescribe?

Does she have a suck reflex when you try to feed her?

Yes! Which is why I'm at a loss of what's going on. She still drinks and has a suck reflex. Just no normal bowel movements & lethargic
Oh... I was going to say to treat her for floppy kid syndrome. But they usually can't suck when they have it. I would stop the electrolytes. If you want to treat for floppy kid, it is 2 cc penicillin and 1 cc thiamine orally twice a day.
I hope that you can get her to a vet.
Have you tried giving her a little honey?

I'd get her to a vet.
Going at noon. Hope that's soon enough.

I wondered about floppy kid but I've had one with floppy kid before and it's not the same. When I pick her up she makes a noise like her tummy hurts now....gosh poor baby. We're going to the vet at 12, and I will keep you all posted.
I'm so glad that you are able to take her in. I hope the vet can help her!!

I just answered in another post of the same.
Only one thread of the same is needed.
It gets confusing if there is 2.

This is what I posted:
Floppy kid, this is what I do.
2 cc's PenG
2 cc's Straight Thiamine or fortified vit b complex
2 cc's baking soda mixed with water, shake well frequentlybecause it may settle to the bottom of the syringe.
Yes, give all orally, at the back corner of the mouth, that is theonly way it treats floppy kid, givefor 3 days, 1 x a day.
They hate it, will gag and fightyou, stop if they cough, wait until they stop, then proceed.
I put each in individual syringes(no needles) and give it one by one.
