Help First time bottle feeding goats

1480 Views 25 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
I have two baby goats that are 19 days old. One we brought back to life and she seems to be a little slower than the other at eating they are eating 5 oz 4 times a day they only weigh about 5 pounds. The one that is slower of the two baby goats started having yellow paste like poop with some mucus in it. I do know that may not be normal and just needing some advise on what to do.

It sounds like they may be over fed. The rule of thumb is 10% up to a max of 20% of body weight. So for a 5 # kid, that is 5x16 = 80 x .10 = 8 ounces total for a 24 hour period . 20% would be 16 ounces - so 4 ounces. Make sure tummies are flat and not poochy. What are you feeding them?

I would definitely start with 10% body weight. Re weigh every few days and adjust based of weight gain.

Thank you so much for that info! That helps a lot.I am feeding them save a kid milk replacer. I thought she would be ready for 6 oz.But I guess that was a bit to much for her. I am using baby bottles as well and I also changed the flow from and three to a four and that may of been to fast for her.

I would give a bottle of electrolytes and transition to whole cows milk from the grocery. Replacers often cause tummy trouble with scours, etc.
More bottle kids have trouble from overfeeding rather than under feeding. Goats are terrific liers. They will act starving even when just fed. Don't let them
fool you! Feed them according to how they feel, the amount you think they should get, etc. Not how much they think they want! ;)

What do I need to do to help stomp the paste mucus like poop? Electrolytes? Probiotic paste ? Less milk?
Using whole milk from the store. Your milk replacer is probably the problem.

So do I need to do electrolytes for a couple days then go to whole milk ? Is whole milk safe and will it provide the nutrients my goat needs ?
Electrolytes for one day. Yes they get what they need from whole milk. Must be red top, whole milk.

Ok so when I do the electrolytes am I replacing the milk for that day ? like say I give her a 5 oz bottle of milk replacer usually at 10:30 do I replace that with a 5 oz bottle of electrolytes? Sorry I’m new at this.
Agreed! More problems are caused by powder replacers than anything ive raised many babies on whole cows milk.

Yes. If you give 5 ounce per bottle of milk, then give 5 ounce of electrolytes. Never mix milk and electrolytes.

I just get confused because I look up about it and it says never replace your milk with electrolytes that I should do it in between feedings 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

When I get done with electrolytes how do I transition to whole milk do I just full on start giving her the whole milk or how is this done cause she was on milk replacer
After 24,hours on electrolytes, use whole milk only. Put a punch of baking soda in the first bottle of the day - every day.
