Help! Goat aborting?

1656 Views 25 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
So I got this really nice doe from someone for really cheap because she was having trouble getting her bred. I finally got her bred and I did not think she was due yet, although I did keep her in with the bucks on and off to try and get her bred so it is possible that she is in fact due today. Anyways I looked at her this morning and she had this weird thing hanging out of her.

It does not look like a kids sack to me it looks like placenta. Is it possible that she is just delivering in a weird way? My current plan is to give her 30 minutes with pushing and then I’m going to go in and see what’s going on. I don’t want to tear anything if it is just a placenta and she is aborting and then I end up with retained placenta. Thoughts?

Hows mom now? That sack looks strange. The tip off area with something white? Looks like the sack before baby

Has she actually been pushing?
Sure seems that way if that is displayed.
I would wash/glove up and go in to see if there is a kid bubble at the door.
Be gentle. She may need to be manually dilated.
If you are afraid to do it, call out a vet right away.

That hanging doesn’t have the buttons on it, so, it may be the pre bubble before the kid.

If you are uncomfortable doing it,
call a vet right away.

Open the bubble if it doesn’t pop on it’s own it looks like there’s something solid on/in it.

Thank you for all the help. She was not contracting on her own and her cervix was not open. I was able to pull the kid after very slowly opening her cervix. We lost the kid but it also seemed like there were several other sacks of dead old kids in there. Not really sure what happened. I spoke with the vet and she advised me to give oxytocin, I do not have any. I have called two horse friends and goat friends trying to find some. Does anyone know of any other solutions? It has not been super long since she delivered, but I don’t think she’s going to get the placenta out on her own with no contractions so I’m just trying to figure out what to do. The vet can’t get out to me until tomorrow with oxytocin and by then I’m worried that her cervix will be shut

Maybe give her some calcium (CMPK) and if she has an udder..milk her out..freeze her colostrum. The milking will get her natural oxytocin going. I would also do a uterine flush if vinegar and warm water with tea tree and lavender eos if you have it. Use a new syringe, sterile squirt type bottle like a hair dye bottle or a feeding tube and syringe to get way up in there. I'm sure you know this but please do not pull the placenta out. Also start her in antibiotics, Penicillin is good..1 cc per 20 pounds 2x a day for 5 to 7.

Thank you! I do have calcium and I can start giving that no problem. I did give her a shot of draxxin per my best recommendation. I can definitely flush the uterus out and do have all of those essential oil’s. Thank you for the advice!

Draxxin is great for respiratory issues and even foot rot..but for this I think i would choose Penicillin. You can do Pen days 2 through 6 and find ish with a Seco d shot of draxxin.

I have the hyped up prescription penicillin so I’ll give that 2-6. Thank you!

I don’t know of anything to tell you that others haven’t yet but I want to tell you I’m sorry you lost the babies.

Thanks for all the responses! I’ve been in close contact with the vet and was able to get oxytocin from a friend. Have administered properly along with calcium and thiamine as well as some banamine (I know this can cause “labor” to slow down but I felt I had to give her something as she was suffering) . Offering warm molasses water currently and hay. Now is just a wait and see. I will update with progress as I’m able. Hoping for the best ❤

Thanks all. We did lose her last night. I feel happy to know we did everything we could to save her. Sometimes this happens with goats and is the worst part.
