Help, goat isn’t gaining weight

313 Views 19 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Boer Mama
He’s almost a year old now. He’s a fainting goat. You can’t tell too much in this picture but his sides are sunken in. He has a little bit of a belly, but his hips are just sunken. I feed him a lot, make sure he forages. But he never seems to gain any weight. And now, he’s sleeping a lot, distancing himself from the others, walking slow, has eye discharge and a cough, and seems like the life has just been sucked out of him. He’s my best friend, and I can’t lose him. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please let me know. I’m desperate.

Take his temp again in an hour after he’s cooled down from being inside. (Normal temp is 101.5-103.5*F) Temps above normal mean an infection. Temps below normal mean rumen trouble. If he’s still high you might want to get through to your vet and see what he recommends.
Do you have any antibiotics? You can give aspirin to bring down a fever if you don’t have banamine. Do not use ibuprofen or acetaminophen ( Advil or Tylenol)

Sounds like pneumonia it’s that time of year with the sudden heat…I’d call the vet.

☝🏻 Also you can give him 3cc’s of Robitussin DM childrens cough syrup to help with the cough. B complex wouldn’t hurt either.
