Help, goat isn’t gaining weight

437 Views 20 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
He’s almost a year old now. He’s a fainting goat. You can’t tell too much in this picture but his sides are sunken in. He has a little bit of a belly, but his hips are just sunken. I feed him a lot, make sure he forages. But he never seems to gain any weight. And now, he’s sleeping a lot, distancing himself from the others, walking slow, has eye discharge and a cough, and seems like the life has just been sucked out of him. He’s my best friend, and I can’t lose him. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please let me know. I’m desperate.

he’s never had cocci. And they have a diet of foraging, alfalfa and medicated feed. (I’m a first time goat owner so if I’m doing anything wrong, let me know) ): but he has never had diarrhea either. And he’s not anemic. But I will check his temp

I just checked his temp, it’s 105.7 I’m freaking out. We brought him inside away from the others, we’re giving him electrolytes to drink. He’s laying down and resting. And okay I’ll see what I can do. Thank you.

Okay I will check his temp soon. And I’ll give him aspirin since I don’t have any banamine. So far what I’ve noticed is he has a fever, cough, snot nose, eye discharge, he’s lethargic, isolating himself from his friends, poops normal, drinks normal, his appetite isn’t great. Based on all that, do you have an idea of what may be going on? Could that all be coccidia or pneumonia?
That’s what we were thinking too. Thank you so so so much for all your help. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

Thank you so much for sharing that! ❤
Thank you to everyone who commented. We took him to the vet, they said it’s a respiratory problem. Gave him banamine and other antibiotics and treated for pneumonia in case. We brought him home, the next day he was hypothermic. Had a temp of 99. Brought his temp back up, called vet again, and he’s fine now. He seems back to his old self. But now I’m more educated and actually made a goat basket and binder full of stuff so I’m ready for anything next time. Thank you everyone ❤
