HELP! SURPRISE BABY!

Okay yall, listen up.

I made a previous post about this months ago in the midst of things. Things have since changed. Early February I took in a mama and her two month old baby from a really nasty bad place. She was living with bucks so I sent in a preg test with her bio security screen bloodwork. It came back negative, could’ve been too early so we did an ultrasound. Also neg. a month later I sent in another test and it came back positive. So, a few weeks later we did another ultrasound. This showed a fluid filled uterus with no baby, so a false preg. This was end of April. No biggie, not super uncommon. A week ago I sent in another blood test Bc mom looks very preg. Thinking she literally has a full term false preg and will end soon. Today I get home AND SHE DROPPED A KID! A tiny, 1.5lb one ear up and one ear down(selenium deficiency?) baby boy. He’s nursing and acting like a normal baby. Mom passed placenta. Now, I’m very well versed in goats. I’ve had them for 7 years and know a lot. What I don’t know is pregnancy and newborn care as I don’t breed, ever. I’m also veterinary technician so feel confident in most things, but I’m looking for advice on what to do next. I obv called the large animal vet and told her to call me back ASAP Bc why did the ultrasound show no baby three months in?? I dipped the umbilical cord in iodine. What else can I do for baby and mom? CDT? What supplements are safe to get minerals back to where they should be? Mom is due for copper bolus? I’m totally shook right now. Someone tell me what to give them!!!!! Ahhh!!!!

Thanks in advance from a panicking goat momma.

Sounds like the kid is doing good so far. Just make sure he is nursing enough. You can give the mama some probiotic for the stress and B vitamins if you have any on hand, other than that, all sounds normal😉

The one ear up/one down is likely caused from being squished in utero, not a selenium deficiency. It should fix itself within the week as he unfolds.
Besides dipping the umbilical in iodine and making sure he's nursing well and that the mom has passed the placenta, there's nothing urgent to worry about. Make sure there's loose minerals available for your doe at all times, and if you think she's deficient it wouldn't hurt to dose her with Replamin gel. You can copper bolus her if you think she needs it but it doesn't need to be done right away. At this point I wouldn't worry about the CD/T shot, just give the dam her booster when it would be due anyway, and give the baby his shot at 4-6 weeks and then again 3 weeks later.

Relax, breathe, it sounds like things are fine ;)

Here’s the little floof! I know his eye looks a little funky in this photo but it’s just a little watery, no concern.

Congratulations! What a darling! I wouldn't be shocked that nothing showed up on the ultrasound. Apparently, that's fairly common. Goats are good at hiding their babies. :)
I would just make sure to feed mom well, though no sudden increases in feed rations, as you probably already know, and make sure to keep an eye on her worm load, as kidding stress sometimes increases the chance of worm problems. In a few weeks, you can either start coccidia prevention for the kid, or just wait and see if he needs it. There's loads of info on that here, so you can do a search to find out more.
If the watery eye persists/gets worse, check that eye for entropion. I had a kid this year with a mildly inverted lid. I was able to fix it myself, not a big deal, but it started out looking just like that, so it's something I watch for, now. :)

Just make sure he is normally active, eating, pooping and peeing. Try and weigh daily to make sure he is growing.
Newborns will sleep alot, but he shouldn't be lethargic. When you pick him up, he should struggle a little (muscle tone)
not lay limply. Eat with gusto then pee, eat some more. Sometimes after eating- they shiver, that is normal, the body is
trying to learn to regulate temp.. A 1/4cc shot of Vitamin B Complex will get his system off to a good start.

What a cute little ball of fluff! Congratulations!
