Help with worming and bottle jaw. Help!!

201 Views 19 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Hounddog23
Had a 1yr old doe I've been treating for a week for anemia and she has improved greatly but today I noticed she has bottle jaw. I then remembered I forgot to worm her. Today is her last day for anemia treatment. If I was to worm her tomorrow would she get sick? Also I wormed my herd with only safeguard the 6th and time got away and I was supposed to worm again. This includes babies from 7-8 weeks old. Would it hurt them if I did the dual worming protocol on them this weekend? Please help!

Edit: her bottle jaw has resided and she's beginning to get color back in her eyes. She's getting additional chlorophyll

I do know in particular if your goat has an extremely high worm count giving Valbazen can make them sick.. so many worms unattaching at once the lining of GI tract could actually bleed and cause shock.

When i used to use safeguard i did it at 10mg/kg double what the bottle recommends but to be honest its not a dewormer i have alot of faith in anymore.

Would it be possible for you to do a fecal or have one done at a vet nearby ?

If not is also understandable i know we dont all have quick access to that. But thats what i would start with.

What wormer would you recommend? I'm not sure I could get in to get fecal. I'm sure she's got a high worm load.
Cydectin(Moxidectin) is a good one safe for preggers goats too.. alot of people like Ivermectin injectable also. Just off my head.

I use herbs also..just started last year and they work amazingly for say a goat like this id try to knock em out naturally first atleast bring down numbers before hitting them with a chemical dewormer if its still needed.. whatever you use try to remember that 10 day 2nd dose to kill off any newly hatched worms.
Oh also look up on this site Tummy Tamer Recipe... it would be great to give to help soothe the GI system dealing with those parasites.

If bottle jaw and anemic, she’s dealing with Barber pole worms.
You can use the injectable ivermectin, but I’d also recommend feeding her orange peels and garlic. The EO in the peels helps make them unsuitable for parasites.
Tummy tamer recipe is a great idea.
Good luck! 🍀

Don't ever deworm all your goats on a schedule, only deworm a goat if they need it (based on fecal results, FAMACHA, body/coat condition, etc)

No it should not hurt her to deworm now, I would use cydectin (moxidectin)

Have you gotten fecals before and about 10 days after deworming with safeguard to see if it works for you?

What's her FAMACHA score? Anemia treatment should continue until it is pink

Herbs are great too, we use Land of Havilah herbs and they have worked on barber pole for us

I've been wondering about natural dewroming. What do you personally use? I'd really like to go that route!

Valbazen is made to be an oral treatment so wont cause the harm of detacthment issue like using an injectable or pour on orally. Its safe to give even if heavy loaded. I used it for years before doing herbal treatment. Safeguard is such a timid dewormer any more. It rarely battles barberpole worm.
Barber pole and liver fluke are the two common parasites to cause bottle jaw . Valbazen addresses both as will Ivomectin PLUS..
If you choose Cydectin, make sure it is not the purple our on. Choose sheep drench would be safer. There is also Quest horse paste..but would save for booster dose as it is strong. Let us know what yiu get and we can helo with proper dosage
I use land of havilah herbal parasite formula with quality essential oils . Its a good natural route if you choose it. For niw..need to address whats causing her bottle jaw and a anemia. .

Best wishes

I went and picked up quest horse paste but didn't buy the Valbazen because of what was said about the worm load release. Would it be better for me to pick it up? I also got Ivermax 1% injectable

You can use the ivomec injectable first..then booster with Quest in 10 days.
Do ivomectin injectable 1 cc per 40# sub q. Be aware..it stings so exoect a reaction. Pull up a good tent of skin..insert the needle..pull back to check for blood..if good..inject then dont let go of the tent....jiggle it a bit helps distribute the meds and it should sting less.
In 10 days booster with quest 1 cc per 100#. Quest will stay innthe system 28 days. If she needs another booster sooner than 28 days...use the ivomectin injectable again but orally this time. It should be safe after 2 treatments. 1 cc per 33#.

Best wishes

She's now getting color back in her eyes. Bottle jaw has went away. I wormed my babies May 6th and got so busy I didn't follow up in 10 days. Would it harm them if I wormed them today and again in 10 days since they had some 2 weeks ago??

Not every parasite case needs a booster. Usually heavy loaded animals do. So if their famacha is good and all looks well..i would instead run a fecal first to see if more dewormer is needed. But if famacha is pale to white, Definitely deworm. Fecals dont tell the whole stroy. But does help ID what parasite is causing issue..
You could do a round of tummy tamer to help boost immune system and address some lingering parasites.
Tummy Tamer
1 teaspoon each
Cayenne pepper
ginger
Cinnamon
clove
slippery elm
Acv
molasses
20 to 30 cc water..blend smooth with a garlic clove ..drench all 2x a day. If dose is too much..split in half and do 4 x a day.

if you have access to quality essential oils..start giving wild orange..1 drop a day for a week then go once a week. @Boer Mama feeds orange peel as treats. Science has found the wild orange.helps kill barber pole worm. Has been a life saver here.

If any had a high parasite load to begin with then it would be a good idea to give the follow up doses

The reason it's not recommended to deworm all goats on a schedule is because it builds dewormer resistance

So, if they didn't need deworming in the first place, I wouldn't give more doses
