How to pull

Hi! I have one mama who had triplets, but is only nursing one of them (Ruth). We milked her and fed the other two, who are now bottle babies and have been sold. Well, Ruth is a monster haha. She is huge. We are still milking her mama twice a day to try and get enough for another little bottle baby (Ollie) we have who has lost her mama. If we don't get there early enough in the morning or if we get there too late, there is very little milk left. Ruth is quite the eater. Anyway....short story long...I've read it's okay at 4 weeks to pull a baby away at night. I'd like to put Ruth and the Ollie in a separate pen at night so we can milk Charlotte in the morning and get a decent amount. My question is, how do I do this without traumatizing Charlotte too much? Ruth and Ollie play great together and I know they will be fine in a little shed by themselves at night. I worry Charlotte will freak out though. She's a good mama and very protective. Will this be really hard on her? Has anyone ever done this? Thank you in advance!

If you can put a big dog kennel or if you have a pen right by mama you can lock them up to where they can still see each other. That helps mom alot.

Okay, thank you! And you think it won’t traumatize the mom too much?

I agree. Separate at night at 2 weeks. Mamas and babies are pretty freaked out for the first couple nights but once they learn the routine they are fine.

I personally don't bother with separation. I just leave baby on mama for the first two days, then pull completely to be bottle fed.

I agree goats are a creature of Habit. They are not going to be thrilled the first night but it will get easier once they realize this is the new normal thing for them.

For my goats, they often seem relieved to have a break from their kids. They know they will get them back in the morning. And they will often go and sleep next to the kid pen. But they seem to enjoy the break from nursing, nursing, nursing.

I separate at 2 weeks. Our kidding/kid pen is in the barn. Moms and babies generally sleep next to each other by the gate. Much less traumatizing.
I agree that moms seem to enjoy a break. Much like humans.;)
