How to wether a buck?

573 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  mjs500doo
Just a quick query how do most people go about wethering their bucks if they need to retire them (and want to keep them as wether pets)...
Do most go the surgical route?
In our case it will be our Nigerian Buck after a season or two of breeding so he will be 1-2 yrs old....
(are even the adult minis small enough to use a sheep or cattle bander on?)....

When my bucks are no longer viable breeders - regardless of the reason - they are sold and replaced.
I know that most people dont keep bucks, that arent being used for breeding.... but if I decide I want to stop breeding but want to keep him for a pet, what do people reccommend for wethering a mini buck (he is registered)....
At that age I would have a vet do it. If he's registered I'd probably keep him as a buck and offer stud service, or sell him...
California bander, it really easy to use. A cattle bander would probably be large enough as well. On adult bucks I cut the sack off about an inch below the band about 10 days after banding.
Cut or band.
