Jaw absess?

1295 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
Hi all - I've never seen this on a goat before. At first I thought she had some cud in her cheek, but I put my fingers in there and discovered it's a bump within her cheek. Been there for over a day. Is this something to be concerned about? Worth a vet visit? Or maybe something that will go away in a few days?

Hi, pretty doe.
It looks like she might have a tooth problem or an abscess from a thorn or something that got stuck in her cheek. Is it hard or soft with mushy center? It could have also been a bug bite or sting.
From the picture, It doesn't appear to be in a area of lymph node but a side view would help. If it is near the lymph node a test for CL would be a good idea.
Personally, I'd get a vet to look at it. If it's a tooth or CL problem they're the best resource if it's a thorn or something that became imbedded a series of warm compresses will bring it to a head and will most likely work itself out. Then you can treat it with ST-37. It works wonders for anything mouth related in humans or goats.

I was kind of thinking it might be a bee sting or something - sometimes there are bees in their water bucket. But it's been there for over a day now, so I thought that might have been too long for a bee sting?

I felt around and it seems to be in her cheek rather than on her gums. It feels hard, but of course she doesn't like me touching it. I'll try to get a side photo today too (I had taken some yesterday, but didn't realize until after that her ears were covering it, haha).

Thanks for the input - I'll see if I can get her to a vet.

You could give her some liquid childrens Benadryl, if it's a bite or sting you should see it go down.
The dose is 5cc's for kids 10-20cc's for adults
I hope she gets to feelin better soon :)

good news is CL wont pop up over night. It being a hard swollen spot with in the cheek itself I would think bee sting as well. Or as GoofyGoat said a sticker. Start with Benadryl and keep an eye on her. Make sure she's not feeling bad or not eating. Give a day or two and see what happens. Cool compress may speed up the healing

That's a bit of a relief! She does seem to be acting pretty normal, and eating just fine. I'll see if I can rustle up some Benadryl, and maybe she'll hold still for a compress. Thanks all!

This is a side view, still there this morning g:

How's she doing?
The bump is still there but it definitely looks smaller. She's still acting normal, too.
