Keeping Appetite Up At Shows?

587 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  .:Linz:.
The majority of my goats will hardly eat and drink while they are at shows.. Not only is this really bad for their health, it makes them look terrible too. I am wondering if electrolytes in the water and probios powder in grain would help?

Sorry doubled!!
Few things we have done:

Electrolytes, kool aid, Gatorade, molasses.

Vitamin B complex shot 8 hrs IM before show arrival. Then orally as you're loading the trailer.

Pulling feed/water 8-12 hrs before show. Be sure to arrive early and pack on the fill.
Added stress can really affect their appetite. Along with electrolytes and such make sure to keep the same food they're used to and also kind of block their pens so they can get some privacy and comfort from the commotion and sounds. I've found if their pens are left wide open with no blocks at all (like tarping up 1 to 2 sides of their pen) sometimes they're just totally stressed the whole time they're at a show/fair.
In addition to what's already been said, I read somewhere that it can be a good idea to take some new hay to shows - so if you're feeding orchard grass at home, try some clover or alfalfa at the show - because they tend to think it's the BEST THING EVER and eat more. :)

You might consider putting raw acv in the water. I know a number of horse people use it with their horses when they in strange surroundings. Another option would be to bring your own water. I know that is not doable for a lot of people, but thought I would mention it anyway. :)
All great ideas... I will put some of these into action next spring when I start showing again. Thanks so much!
Oh yeah, we bring our own water, too.
