so my nd kids are sucking poor dawn dry, every time she stands they rush her and she tries to run, theyre ruthless, and milk-thirsty all the time. she's an FF so not much of an udder going on. any ideas, to get her with more milk (im not milking at the moment) or :? ?? thanks
You can give her more alfalfa as well as a bit more grain, make sure she is drinking plenty. Since she doesn't have a full capacity udder yet, the kids will nurse more often, best to let them do it too, the more they nurse the more she'll make.
okay, thanks. i dont have alfalfa at the moment, but she'll get a bit more grain. i guess supply will meet demand..or try to, these little kids are bottomless pits. lol
Angel was a 2nd freshener this past March, she had twin bucklings and really no udder, scared me too as I thot I would have to supplement with bottles. Her thread is in the kidding coral somewhere...anyhow, within 2weeks of those boys continually on her, her udder doubled and each weighed 12 pounds at 5 weeks old.
If you can get her on alfalfa pellets i would. She needs the calcium to keep up with the milk making and then kids demands. beth
The weight of the kids at 5 days old should be at least a 1/2 to 1 pound more than their birth weight. As long as they are steadily gaining then they are getting plenty....and alfalfa pellets are a great thing to have...easier to get than the hay and much easier to ration. My nigi girls in milk get 2 cups of 18% 2x a day as well as 1 cup alfalfa pellets 2x a day.
okay, the doe is 1lb and the buck is 1.5lbs, so there on track. dawn seems to be keeping up and I'll get those pellets tommorrow. thanks!!
