Large Breed Kidding at day 140?

1648 Views 55 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Boer Mama
It’s day 138 for my American Alpine doe. She’s not in labor by any means but she looks like she could go in the next few days. Ligaments are still hard but are definitely moving towards squishy, if that makes sense. The thing that makes me think she’s close is the fact that her udder is really full, and she usually doesn’t fill up until right before labor, as in the day of. She’s biting her sides a lot and even licked her sides a little. She’s pawing like crazy. There’s a corner of the barn that is all dug up.
Should I be concerned?

Oh and she’s yawning, grinding her teeth, and grunting. But all that has been normal for her as she gets close to giving birth. It’s not been a sign I go by to know how close she is to kidding. But I did notice she was super loud this morning. And she’s been extra clingy today. As in she wants her face in my face all the time lol.

I forgot to mention that her belly hasn’t dropped and I can feel kids kicking. Thinking she has two, MAYBE three if they are small. The thing I always go by are ligaments. Every single year she loses her ligaments and within 12 hours she has her kids on the ground.

Certainly keep an eye on her since she is close but I wouldn't panic.

So if she lost her ligaments in the next few days I shouldn’t worry about the kids? I know how to tell when she’s in labor so I’m not worried about that. I just want to know that if she does go into labor I don’t have to call our vet.

Yep, she'd be fine kidding at day 140. I've had it happen with my Nubians. And the kids were perfectly fine and healthy.

I've never been able to trust ligaments so can't help you there. You can't stop her from going into labor so just keep an eye on her and try to be there when she kids.

Thankfully Ila’s ligaments are very trustworthy, haha!

Any further progress or is she keeping them in a little longer? 🍀

She is getting super uncomfortable and her ligaments are slowly getting softer. So it’s just a waiting game! I do have another question… are latex or nitrile gloves ok to use in assisting? And last year I had to call my vet for directions in pulling a kid and he said a little coconut oil was on for a lubricant. Do y’all have thoughts on that? She got really sick after birth so I want to make sure everything goes ok!

The type of gloves only matters if you have an allergy. Coconut oil is fine but I found I really didn't need it.

Looks like she’s losing her mucus plug! She’s got some clear/opaque discharge coming out. She still has her ligaments though, so I’m thinking she might lose her ligaments sometime tonight and deliver early morning, which I was hoping wouldn’t happen because I appreciate sleep, haha!

Her udder has definitely popped as well, and her belly has dropped. This is all making me think within the next 24 hours. It’s 8:00pm here so I’m just praying it’s not going to be an all nighter. Especially because I already have a headache. I’m just waiting for her ligaments to go.

Oh and I think she’s been having Braxton hicks all day because her tail has been super stiff and it was bending back while her tail bone was lifting. Her vulva didn’t really sink in which made me think it was just her body getting the babies in place.

Hopefully you can sleep tonight- no long strand of goo yet 🍀🍀🍀

There’s more discharge this morning! Thankfully I got some sleep but every time I checked her she was pressing her head against the wall or pacing. It wasn’t until about 5:00am that I saw her lay down, and since then she’s been getting up and down a bunch. It’s 6:30 now and I’m out here with her. She’s got a longer string of goo and is SUPER clingy… as in face to face and she just layed down right next to me lol. And her udder is getting pretty tight. She usually doesn’t get a super full udder until after she delivers. Ligaments are still there but getting squishier by the hour. If I had to guess I’d say she’ll lose her ligaments sometime later this morning and deliver in the evening. But only time will tell!
