Sacajawea has a lump on the side of her mouth----sore tooth, abscess or CL? It's quarter sized and hard.

    Re: Lump

definately would need a picture to take a look at it.

Does it feel like it is connected to the jaw or does it seem "movable"?

    When did it show up?

How big was it when you first saw it compared to now?

Could it be she is packing cud? (I have 1 doe that does that and scared the crud out of me every time!)

I know that herd that you got them from is not CL tested, as I asked.......

    Re: Lump

No there is hair on it.
It doesn't move under the skin, but it is a solid lump.
No absess that i can see.
I thought she was chewing cud the first time I saw it, like two days ago, but nope, touched it this morning and it's still there.
I was going to do my testing in late march-april.
she doesn't like me touching it, but it isn't hot or anything, just hard and round.

    Re: Lump

With CL, it won't start loosing the hair till right before it ruptures.

A picture would be great - I will be looking for it.

Is CL curable? I haven't read up on it much, but is it as bad as CAE?

    Re: Lump

CL is not curable and is way worse then CAE, in my opinion.

Lets not jump to conclusions though - lets take a look and see what we can see. It is not expensive to have a blood test done on her if warrented.

    Re: Lump

She probably poked it on something. I had a goat with a bump just like that, it came to a head and I had it tested. It turned out to be nothing. She healed up with no scar or anything. Let me see if I can find pictures of it for you.

I'll go take some pictures now. should I shave it? She's pretty hairy.

Runaround: it's like right beside her lip.

    Re: Lump

I would, that way you can see if it's getting bigger and keep it clean if/when it does come to a head.

    Re: Lump

In that location Talitha, it's likely a splinter...either fom her hay or from rubbing her face against a post or wall. Cl lumps that are on the head are usually located under the ears, under the jaw and around the neck.

If it is a splinter it will do the same as any foreign object will do, fester and then rupture...oozing a greenish liquid to "cleanse" the wound. Cl is more thick and whitish green. If her lump hasn't ruptured but is still solid, check it in a few days, the swelling may even go down and it won't fester.

I notice in the 1st 2 pics a little spot in the middle....that looks like maybe a splinter or something got in there and it festered...the 3rd pic ....did you pop it ...it looks like it is raw there?

Just want to point out that CL is not a death sentence anymore. You can "cure" it with an autogenous vaccine.
