Management Times

So, in case anyone is wondering... I'm looking at expanding my heard from from 3 in 2022. With 3 goats, management is pretty easy and I can laze my way through it. Ok, not laze, but I can be casual. With a larger operation, I'm going to need some help and organization. That means, for me, I have to get more ridged... more OCD. If nothing else, I need to have tasks that I can hand over to helpers when I get them. I realize that there's probably as many different answers as there are active members. I also found out that the needs of each herd could be different and affect the answers. With that in mind, how often do each of you...

Do basic vitals on the goats (temp, pulse, respiration)

Do fecal counts?

Bolus Copper? (Does anybody do it regularly or does everybody look for signs of deficiency only? What about Copper overdose?)

What about BO-SE shots? I heard about that from one goat herder but that seems to be a solution looking for a problem in the goat world... or my goat world.

Trimming I already figured out is 4-weeks average. Shorten the time for wet/soft ground. Lengthen for rough/dry ground.

We do general health checks when we trim hooves. I like getting temps a few times on each goat to learn their "normal" but other than that only when they seem off.

Do fecal counts?

I like doing a fecal 2 times a year as a check up as well as any time one seems to need a check.

We bolus every 3 to 4 months based in condition.

We do BoSe once to twice a year. Most mine are good once but I have a few who seem to need it twice a year.

Basically vitals i honestly only do when they are acting off
Fecal counts if they are showing signs of needing wormed……rough coat, weight loss, not gaining weight well or scours
I copper bolus every 3-4 months, everyone gets it. But I am experimenting with minerals so will be holding off to see if I can cut that down
Bo-se 30 days before the does are due and all new borns get 1/2cc at birth. This year will be kinda a wait and see but I might start adding it to before breeding too
Trimming most once a year, some twice but I live in a dry area where the ground gets hard as a rock as well as rocks to play with and I have spent the last 12 years culling and being selective over who is kept over hoof growth

How many goats are you planning to have?
Hmm... If I were to give a number on this morning of the new year, I would like to have at least 15 goats by the end of the year and maybe as many as 20. It's goat math. Much like rabbit math or chicken math. I'm sure I'll end up with more than I originally plan. 😆 I've already got my sites set on 6: a collection of "mini nubians" from three different farms and we'll be keeping two of the doelings from this spring. They were twins born on my daughter's birthday, so they've got special signifigance. Of course, I'll probably be swapping the buck out for another since I'm kinda squeemish about keeping daughter and fathers (or sons and mothers) on the same property. That'll be a hard day for me since the buck is partial to me -- but I'm more partial to my daughter than the buck.

The rest will depend on mother nature and what's available. The mini nubian herd will be new in 2022 and they're somewhat hard to find in the area. At least, as an active program. There seems to be a number of people who keep both ND and Nubians and let them mix for first gen goats. Not a lot of people who've gone to the next generation, though.
