Mastitis?

907 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
Is this mastitis? Hopefully the pictures post correctly. She's a new doe, I've only been milking her for 3 days, twice a day. She just had her kids weaned when i bought her. Second freshener. Her udder and teats feel normal temperature and no hard spots. Her milk is clear and normal looking but lots of chunkies coming out. She still has a great appetite and moving around fine. I just dewormed her and gave copper 2 days ago. She came to me very skinny. I've been massaging her udder when I milk to help her let down, maybe I'm working loose a bunch of tissue???

I would do a mastitis test and treat appropriately
Does that feel like tissue..meaty or more like Mozzarella cheese? Do they milk our easy? Testing sure wouldn't hurt. How does her milk taste?

It seems more meaty to me. My gut is just telling me it's not mastitis but I could be wrong. She stands perfectly for milking, doesn't even flinch, and her milk tastes pretty good. Not as good as my other goats that I've had for a while but it does taste like milk from a stressed out goat, and she had a 2 hour car ride plus weaning her kids to get to me so I'm sure she's stressed, and on top of that she's under weight. I of course don't have a test kit on hand and they're not available in town but lesson learned to keep one on hand! I put some Montana Emu Ranch muscle rub on her whole udder and teats, it's very mellow and doesn't burn and she's also getting half a teaspoon of ACV per milking like my other goats.
Hum. You could feed 30 cc of her milk back to her a few times. If there is bacteria there her body will make antibodies for it. I would keep milking her out to see if the tissue loss stops. Order a mastitis test just in case.
Keep an eye for color change, udder hardness or lumps ect.
