My doe is down!

1626 Views 22 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
I'm new goat owner. My mini nubian/Boer cross doe just fresh (1st time) kidded on Friday. Today is Tuesday. All has seemed fine, doeling nursing good, Mama eating/drinking etc. This evening I come home to find Mama laying down with obvious membrane/water/nodules? passed and having difficulty standing. Got her up & walked her 15-20 ft around the stall, let kid nurse and she's down again and not wanting to get up. I feel this is not normal and need suggestions what to do for her. Thanks for any info.

What do you mean by membrane/water/nodules? Can you post a picture? Did she pass her placenta?

Are you sure she delivered all her kids?
I’d Personally get a vet to check her ASAP.

Yes she passed placenta right after kidding. I can't get a picture. Was a small (4-5") piece of clear looking membrane like placenta looked like clear round nodes in it. Lots water her tail is soaking wet and the hay was wet under her rear. No blood. She's not being vocal. Just lays right back down when I get her up.

Feeling her belly there is no indication of another kid such as feeling bony material. Her belly is soft. I will follow up with the vet.

Hows your girl? Did you check her temperature? How about her FAMACHA?

She has no temp. Passed a little more mucous type material overnight. She’s up and drinking water this morning. I recently got her already bred. The lady I got her from said she had been treated for worms before breeding and that is all.

If she had no temp she would be dead. What did the thermometer read?

I'm very confused. She gave birth last Fri and you bred her already? Goats should only be bred once a year.

No she was saying she recently purchased the doe and the doe was pregnant at that time.

Glad she is up and drinking this morning. Has she eaten grain or alfalfa since kidding?

I think she meant she recently bought her bred.

You need a vet to check her. She may have another kid in there. Asap before you loose her.

Okay. More specifically. She was pregnant when I got her 3 weeks ago. Her temperature is 102.1. (My intent was “no feverish temp”). I am awaiting a return call from the nearest vet to try to get her attended. Thank You all for your replies and posts.

Not necessarily, you can't always feel it.

Unfortunately she did not make it to the Vet. Seems there is another kid and she couldn’t birth it. My heart is broken. I never dreamed this could happen after 4 days. This has been a horrible learning experience. Her baby is doing very well. Got colostrum as needed in these first few days. We are now going to bottle raise her. Thank You all so very much for your input.

Aw, so sorry for your loss. Sometimes the kid is already in the birth canal and can't be felt by bumping. You had no way to know. That is so sad for you and your doe.
