My new additions to the herd!

I started this year with 4 does and 2 bucks. Shamrock had twin doelings. And today I have 9 does and 2 bucks! Welcome my three Nubians! Two are pregnant and due between May 20 and early June. They are both 2 years old. The other one is one year old. Flora Rose is a pure blood Nubian and has the pink collar. Francis is an American and has the black collar. Reba is a pure blood, and her father is The King Rains from TrulyBlue if anyone knows him from show rings. I was just looking for ADGA registered Nubians with good teats because Shamrock (Nigerian) is very hard to milk. They were such a wonderful surprise find! I thought I wasn’t going to find Nubians this year and got referred to a friend of TrulyBlue who was wanting to sell two of her goats. I’m so happy.

They have such sweet faces. You're going to get some amazing, long eared babies out of them!

Well, we are suddenly getting materials to make a new shelter for them since they are so big and prissy to use what we’d had. They think very differently than our Nigerian girls. Hoping 8x5 is a good size shelter. I do think it’s going to be the best shelter we’ve ever build though!

Best wishes. Nubians take a lot of space - so 8x5 for three is still very small. . . . do think about your kidding pens. I use a 8x10 each for mamas and babies.

Definitely need bigger than 8x5. I'd say at least 12x12.

I’ve been leaning towards larger. My dad’s building it for me, so I don’t want to hurt his feelings...He just keeps forgetting how big they are, you know? He argued with me a bit that 4x8 “would be plenty” and wanted the back to be 3 ft tall...I said no. The wood is also on the inside of the frame and taking even more space... : [] He really wants them to be movable. We are going to build new pens for the does behind the house instead of so far and too close to the boys. I think maybe we should make 2 and put them together. I know he doesn’t want to do that much work...but if it needs to be done, it does.
I mean 8x5 is kinda the space they take up just standing together at the fence. It’s going to take a bit to get used to their size and mannerisms. Nigerian dwarfs will happily sleep in one shelter together despite having a few shelters in a pen, jump all over it, and will even sleep on an upright tire like a goat potato. They love things like that. Our Nubians are no plebeians! They seem to want space and don’t seem like the type to cram into a makeshift shelter. They are so different it’s cool to watch them.

Nubians require more space. If you want them, please give them the room they need. I have 8x6 pens for dry yearlings INDIVIDUALLY, and yes - they take that much room.

What are the outside fenced in enclosure dimensions you think would be plenty of room for them? The pens we build for the Nigerians are 30x30. We put two goats in each one. I’m thinking of at least doubling that for the Nubian group. The new pens will be much larger for the Nigerians as well. I am going to head into the woods today and measure and mark pen dimensions (and trees to take down) in the woods behind our house.

I want the shelter we are building in the middle. Hot wire above the fence and hot wire on the outside to keep coyotes out. I would appreciate any coyote advise you have! So far they haven’t messed with our animals but...It’s a concern of mine. I believe the shelter is going to be modular in design. 5x8 with a 2-4 foot overhang roof. And another shelter exactly the same so that the two come together to have a 4-6roof covered middle section to add a total shelter space of 14-16 x 8 feet. We could add gates to the front and back of this space as well to make it more like a shed. Maybe we will add some roofing overhang on the sides as well for more outside sleeping space during the day. There won’t be any pens inside the shelter we are building. It’s a space they would all share until kidding and then after their kids are old enough to be brought outside into the pens. The pen would have at least one other structure they could lay on or sleep under/jump around on. I also want a pen built for kids and younger goats to play in with tires and other fun stuff.

As for kidding pens, we have two 8.5 x 8 ft pens in the garage that are separated with a removable divider so the two pens can become ONE pen about 17 x 8. Then, we also have a 12 x 20 shed we bought to put kidding pens in. Door is in the middle of the shelter and there is space for two 7 x 12 pens on each side of the door. We could also just use the entire inside.
