My new La Mancha doe!

Meet Keisha, my newest edition to the herd! She is a two year old registered La Mancha doe! I got her yesterday, and she is doing well. She is my first goat I have owned that’s in milk, so I’m still trying to figure it all out. She gives 1 and a half gallons a day, which seems like a LOT of milk, but then again I’m new to milking. Here’s a few pics. Sorry they’re not the greatest; I just snapped them as soon as we got her home yesterday. I’ll try to get some better ones later.😉

Thanks y'all! I got her from a farm about an hour away from us. The woman has twelve La Maancha does in milk and several other breeds, and she just wanted to down size her herd. I think I got a pretty good deal, but I've never purchased a goat in milk before.

How do yall think she looks as far as conformation?

She is not set well or shaved so confirmation is harder to see. Shes really pretty but a little under weight may want to try and bulk her up a bit. Has she had any blood work done? Sorry for the question and congrats on your new doe. I'm thinking of getting some standard-size goats to up milk production over a gallon a day from one doe would be great!

Is her nose bent? If so she most likely has wry face and is not some thing that should be registered.

Oh, ok! Yeah, I thought she might be kinda underweight, but I've never had La Manchas, so I wasn't sure if they were more on the skinnier side as opposed to Nubians. I'll be feeding her alfalfa and grain while I'm milking, so hopefully she'll get some good weight on her. As far as blood work, I don't think she has had any done, or at least not that I'm aware of. If you don't mind me asking, what would blood work be for? As in what would it be testing for?

Yeah, I did notice that her nose seemed a little bent! 😅 I've never seen a goat like that! Oh, I didn't realize that something like that would make it where she shouldn't be registered! Oh well. I'm not planning on showing her or anything like that, just keeping her for dairy purposes, so that doesn't really bother me.

Also, her fur feels pretty corse, and I'm wondering if she might be coffer deficient. I only have boluses for kids, up to 50 pounds. Could I just give her two of them since it's what I have? I have no idea how much she weighs... and I have no idea how to weigh her! I weigh my little kids and younger goats by weighing myself, then picking them up and subtracting my weight. But I don't think I'll be able to do that with her...
I'm guessing she probably weighs at least 100 lbs, right?

You can get a goat weigh tape for a fairly accurate weight.

She's lovely 💜 and I love her name.

Its awfully hard to put weight on a doe producing that much, but slow and steady wins the race.

My girls had rough coats and were a little thin when I got them, and copper bolus + good minerals + BOSS and good feed and forage has really got them healthy and shiny.

Join us on the dairy page for fun ideas of what to do with all that milk!

I won't tell you not to breed her because her your doe.... but would ask that you don't register her kids at least. She looks like a lovely doe. 🤗

Ok! Yeah, I wasn't planning on registering her kids any way. I don't even have access to a La Mancha buck, so I'll have to breed her with my Nubian buck. The lady I bought her from had a few La Mancha/Nubian crosses, so I'm assuming that's ok to do?
