New goa... pets

Well, my daughter blinked her eye lashes, and I gave in. We have a couple of sheep. They're Rambouillet/Targhee mixes, wethers (or soon to be), about 12 weeks old. My first impression is that there is an impressive lack of laymen information on their care. I can't get on the Internet without tripping over something about goat care, dog care, cat care, cow care, etc. Sheep care... not so much. Second impression is that the corral is going to be more smelly fecal wise. My goats floor smells, mostly like.. I don't know... my rabbits maybe with 9 does of various age. My sheep corral smells like a cow field, after a day, with only 2. Fourth impression is that they are loud. Louder than my goats except my bucks when they're really really really worked up. Voice is lower, too, more base. Last impression is that they are soft and fluffy. I haven't decided if I agree with cute the way my daughter exclaims.

Eye Fawn Terrestrial animal Sheep Sheep

Anyway, here's the babies (I think). Creampuff and Mochi

They certainly look cute in the picture. The aroma did not come through though.

They are really well built and sturdy. I dont think sheep smell more than goats do? As long as you clean the pen every second day and nature does the rest. Yes sheep are noisy in general. So now you wont hear the goats as much?

I think my nose is more sensitive than most -- at least in my family. I smell the sheep pen more than I smell the goat pen -- but none of them smell from a distance. This is only when I'm in it. As for noise... I don't know if I agree with you. So far, it seems as if the goats got louder to compete!!!

Oh no. Sheep are louder than goats? And they stink? I may have to rethink my recent order of three sheep.

Believe it or not goat urine smells worse than sheep. Sheep wool is what you smell. It has an oil that goats dont have. I think your goats and sheep will be about equal in volume.

When I had Nubians, they were hands down more vocal/communicative of their needs. So vocalness could be breed dependent, as in goats so goes the sheep.
Also, the sheep may be more vocal initially, but as they settle down become more quiet, barring certain times such as when they play Marco Polo in the pasture...
I kinda like the smell of sheep, but agree it's in the lanolin, the best thing is how soft, and moisturizing it is to pet/milk/sheer the sheep. I don't find the buck smell to be over powering though(unless I'm going out of the house, then I'm super conscious of eau d' buck), so it could just be me. :p

They defiantly have a different smell to them. It’s more musky is the only way I can explain it. It doesn’t bother me too much unless it’s a wet sheep then I think they stink lol but I don’t think my dog stinks until he gets wet either lol
But good job letting her try something different!

Our Katahdins are definitely loud. Always so loud especially at feeding time. The goats, Nubians and mini-Nubians, super-duper quiet. I try to feed the sheep fast so I can enjoy quiet while I finish chores LOL.

Our sheep don't seem to smell more, though, others said it's the wool and ours are hair sheep so maybe that is why?

I agree with your daughter, they're pretty cute!!

Good to hear a goat person's thoughts on sheep. They are not in my immediate future, but I see one and they look awesome and I think, hmmm, maybe I WILL get one (two max!) one day!

Good luck!

The only time they are loud is when in heat (some of them) or if they cry because babies are locked up and that's just in the morning until they're milked and babies are out. Even then, they aren't really loud. According to everyone else and Nubians, I must have gotten a defective group 😂 I'm ok with it though lol

After having them for a week now, I have a better feel on what I think I'm in for. The smell I was talking about was the sheep (resist.. resist..) poop. I think I've always been more sensitive to fecal smells than most of the people I know. It's a genetic thing. I smell the sheeps' more than I smell the goats, is all. In fact, I hardly smell anything from the goat corrals unless it got (really) wet somehow and often not even then. The sheep, if I stand in a certain area, carry's the distinct oder of farm waste. The sheep themselves don't smell any more than the goats and never have to my nose. As for the noise, they have quieted down now that they're acclimated. Their "baaa" is still distinctive and I can tell when it's a sheep or a goat. It's lower in tone and higher than volume. Only times my goats are louder is if they're "screaming" which they don't do often, thankfully,

Love the smell of farm!! The town here was once known for the cow feedlots. The wind direction blew over the feedlots and then into town. Loved it! Everybody in my circle called it "The Smell of Gilbert." But real estate won out. Town planners are trying to turn it into a city by building massive apartment complexes everywhere. The feedlots were sold and have been bulldozed :(. I miss "The Smell of Gilbert"
