I have a dam (Pearl) and her daughter (Aria) and I am not sure who to keep, or if I should keep both of them. It is of course complicated by the fact that Pearl will not pose for photos and Aria will! I also have Pearl’s half sister and I am not sure if keeping all three means that my bloodlines would be to close (I have a four goat herd). They are Pygora fiber goats if it matters.

A lot depends on what your goals are. Genetic improvement? Fiber production? Pet? Brush control? Hobby? Breeding? All things equal....I will typically keep a young, healthy, proven doe over her daughter unless I am specifically looking to replace the dam.
My goals are good breeding and show goats, as well as fiber. It is hard to tell on fiber until the kids are quite a bit older, but both of the doelings parents have lovely fleeces so that is not as much of an issue. I’m also trying to breed for friendly and easy to handle and the mother doesn’t really have that.
