My Dh is not going to be very happy with me....My little sister called and said that my stepdad had gotten his new wife a pig and since he has to have surgery they really don't have time for it so he offered it to my little sister and shes not sure she will have time so she offered it to me and with me trying to be as self sufficient as I can be I thought BACON....so I said yes which wouldnt be that bad but DH does not cull or process any thing Im always the one skinning and processing deer meat ect. :hair: :hair:

Sounds more like open mouth, insert bacon? Are you getting the pig? My friend told me (I have no experience) that pig is easy to butcher.

Oh I totally agree. I could NEVER EVER do it, but hey that is me. WOW, you are a bigger woman then I ever will be. I would have to say I am more like your husband.

My DH just butchered 12 pigs. He and a friend did it, and I have to say it is very good, but beings it did not go to a shop, we did not get any bacon, because it has to be cured. OH, how i would of loved some bacon. I am sure they could of but they just did not do it.

Butchering isnt easy but it sure helps with grocery prices. My kids love deer jerky and so does my husband. Fresh eggs help too.I cant wait until milking time and being able to pass up expensive hormone laden store bought milk.

It is hard to kill something to eat it but it is real- steaks aren't born is plastic wrap- the least I can do is see that it is well treated with a good quality of life before they go.
I used to drive down I5 and pass a huge (1000 acre?) feed lot- the stink was there miles before you got there. There were hundends of cattle standing in their own piles of manure in small paddock- sometimes you saw a steer literally standing on top a twenty foot high pile of manure. No grass for miles.
I decided that, since I couldn't manage being a vegetarian, I should at least see that they enjoyed what time they had .
So I learned to eat what I could grow well. I wish I had the courage to do my own butchering but I don't. I have a lot of respect for those who can.
Next I suppose is eggs- but I don't know if I can deal with a flock of retired chickens. Animals who produce for me have a retirement plan- I keep them healthy and happy til a natural death.

I agree on raising your own meat - we jsut bought two calves this past weekend! LOL! I think they are being named roast and T-bone - at least that is what hubby said!
