Hi, one of my seasoned does just gave birth 10 minutes ago, and a lot of mucus and fluid the color of burnt orange (if that makes sense) came out. This is my 2nd year breeding goats on my own but have seen/helped with other small farmers and never seen/heard of this. Could it be a mineral deficiency? Baby doeling is up and alert, mother is alert and everything seems fine, just wondering what the heck it could be and if it requires my attention for anything! Thank you.

That is a good guess actually- I had not even thought about that! I'm so used to their first poops being black like humans and then go orangey.

If baby passed meconium inside mama watch for infection. Make sure moms temp is normal and that she eating well and there is no foul smell

I've had the same thing happen too. Almost reddish orange juice colored. I was worried that it was an infection or something, but as it turns out, mom and babies were just fine. Don't know why or what caused it, but if everything else checks out normal, just keep an eye on them.

It happens quite often with a difficult birth and/or prolonged delivery. The stress causes the kid to poop inside the sac and it comes out orange. I've seen it several times but it's not a problem. It won't cause an infection in the doe. Baby poop inside the mom is sterile. It's a product of the amniotic fluid the fetus drinks in utero and it won't hurt mama.

So glad someone mentioned this.... yeah, if you think it through, there's no bacteria (gut flora) in the baby until after it's out and is exposed to non-sterile stuff.

Meconium staining can look anywhere from very greenish-yellow to more neon yellow to orangish- all are normal and depend on the dilution (i.e. how much mec was passed) and the coloration of the kids hair, among other factors.
