Our goat got kicked and can't walk; is there anything I can do???

HI,
I'm living with a family that has goats and we need some major help. One of the new little goats got kicked by a really nice donkey. Or that's what we think. The goat is a few months old and now she cannot walk at all. Her back legs are limp. It's heartbreaking. I don't have an x-ray and they cannot afford to get one. The vet just said to wait and see. I grew up in a city and have a lot of dog know-how but don't know anything about goats. At the moment I'm helping rehabilitate the leg of our puppy who also got a kick and has a neurological mess with his back leg. I'm doing hydrotherapy and massage to regenerate movement and it's working! Is there anything I can do with a little goat with a spunky and incredibly endearing personality???? Can neuroplasticity help a goat who has no movement in her back legs??????? I'm trained in techniques for PTSD and working with trauma in humans. I can't believe I'm on a goat forum. I grew up in Philadephia and I'm living now on a small farm. Somehow I'm hoping that goats can have this response and it doesn't only mean too much damage to her spine. Any help is all my help.
Hoping for a miracle,
Susan

Welcome to the forum. I can’t help you because I’ve never had any experience with a goat getting kicked by a donkey but these people might be able to help you.
@happybleats @Moers kiko boars @Rancho Draco @GoofyGoat
I've never dealt with this either. I'm sure someone on here has though
@Rancho Draco, I didn’t think you had but for some reason you were one of the first people to pop into my mind.

Welcome to the forum. How old is the goat? Do legs seem to have feeling in them if you pinch them? If you stand him up with support does she try to stand or are legs limp noodles? Does she seem to be hurting..pooping ok? Peeing fine? And grab her temp. (101.5to 103.5 I'd normal range.
I would do the check up and I would start Dexamethsone asap. 1 cc per 20 pounds IM. Or banamine 1/4 cc per 25 pounds Sub q. if they can't get Dex. Injectable complex as a support

The goat may have a broken spine.
I honestly cannot direct you on what to do, as I highly recommend an X-ray to know how to proceed. :(

At work on a lunch break so a short response for now. Can you palpate down the goats spine to see if any displacement of the vertebra have occurred? If pinched nerves then they can sometimes regain some use after the inflammation goes down. Yes pinching the lower parts of legs near the hooves can help you figure out if they have any sensation in the hind end or if the nerve damage is severe. How long ago was it kicked? How big was the donkey? Ok I will check back after work. I understand you can't afford an xray but an xray would answer a lot of questions. When we cannot do that we need to try to assess the situation the best we can. Document pee and poo movements as well.

I don't have experience with this, but try contacting Goats of Anarchy, they are an animal sanctuary that has a ton of experience with rehabilitating goats like this: Contact — Goats of Anarchy

Uch, it was 4 days ago and I didn't know. Thank you so much for your response. I palpated her spine but couldn't feel the displacement. She curled up and I don't want to move her too much. She didn't respond much when I poked around her legs but she snuggled up next to me. The donkey is a full-size female and I only got part of the story. It's late here in this part of the world and I couldn't get more information. I've been taking care of a puppy who had his leg injured and has also some kind of neurological damage and can't walk. The actual dog vet suggested doing massaging his whole leg and hydrotherapy so I headed to the water. I was hoping to also do something with the goat but she's pretty limp. It's awful. I'd love it to be a pinched nerve but I imagine she would be responding already. She got one shot. I'll check everything again in the morning. It's hard living on a farm!

Oh my. With it being 4 days if the goat has been receiving anti-inflammatory meds and not having any response in the hind end to pressure being placed on the hind legs there is a very good chance that he full sized donkey could of severed the spinal cord at some point in the spine.

There is the cross over theory that therapy on the good side will cross over to the damaged side. If I remember it was like 75% (could be wrong on % as it's been years since we had the pt training on it) of bodily response will transfer over to the opposite side. Is the goat still able to go to the bathroom ? I am so sorry. As long as the goat is not in pain and trying to improve I would give some time to see if inflammation is mixing nerve signals. It's sad to say that may not be the case. Someone mentioned above Goats of Anarchy. I would go ahead and reach out to them for some more in-depth suggestions. I will keep my fingers crossed hoping for the best. Sounds like the goat is still being a love bug even after this accident.

Also, is the donkey still with the goats? It might should be removed from the goat pen/pasture so it doesn’t hurt another goat. Do you know if the donkey was playing and did it on accident? Or was the goat doing something it shouldn’t have been and made the donkey mad? Or did the donkey just do it for no reason? No pressure if you don’t know the answer. I am just concerned for the other goats.
HI,
Her legs are kind of limp noodles:cautious:. She is pooping and I'll check with the family if she is still getting any medication. She was such a weak little trooper with a big personality when she was born small and she made it. Turns out the donkey went a little crazy with her. It's awful. Thank you all for your responses. It's awkward because she's not mine and I'm navigating another culture here.
If you have access to quality essential oils...Frankincense down her spine may be beneficial. I understand its hard when in different countries, we have different things available. Any herbs there with anti-inflammatory benefits?

I agree about the donkey. We have donkeys and they run the back pasture behind the goats pen. We never run together because they can be unpredictable.

HI Again,,
Thank you all for such specific and helpful information. It was enough to get the family to call the vet again to come. With much care and gratitude,
Susan

Glad the vet will see the goat, an X-ray should tell us if the spine is damaged.
I am truly sorry. :(
Oh that's wonderful news. Sending positive thoughts your way!!

Best wishes
Oh frankincense .... I'm in Israel...on the literal original spice trail for frankincense. I have some in the hard crystal form.... I'll see how to get oil in the morning.

I just read how to make the oil. I will do it now. Funny I've had the frankincense resin for ages and I recently put it on my counter to make me do something with it. And of course, I have the best local olive oil.

So glad they are calling the vet again and best wishes! You are lucky to live on the spice trail with those resources in your area.
