Finally our Lucy had her calf!!! A nice big heifer. She had it about 5 in the morning and we were there shortly after; so we were able to bring it inside and blowdry it off (its -18) New baby, fresh milk again and since this our only baby for the year .....no more middle of the night baby checks in below zero weather! Happy Day!!!!
Everyone is still doing good and we all survived the extreme cold. We also picked up another heifer calf from a dairy, that was also born that morning. Mama loved them both right away, which was a huge relief. They’re called Zippers and Buttons.
Not this go around, we are going to end up selling them this fall I think. I think three adult cows is going to be our max and right now we already have our Ayrshire and a Jersey Heifer. My hope is that I can find someone to AI both of them this year. I really want to keep having our Ayrshire bred to either an Ayrshire or a Guernsey...until we get a heifer, and then keep that one.
