Overate pellets - 2 year old has scours

485 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  GoofyGoat
Goats got into the bin of timothy pellets on Saturday. All 4 were off for a day, 3 seem back to normal, but my 2 year old doe has had scours for 3 days now. It's slowed down but her poop is still liquid. She's eating but looks worn out.

I've dealt with scours as a result of coccidia but not because of an imbalanced rumen.
Current Plan:
Bismuth Subsalicylate
Electrolytes
Vitimin B injection
Copper Bolus once the scours slow down a bit.

Deep clean the barn (how on earth did she poop on the walls??)

I don't have the herd on a worming schedule - should I ivermectin all 4 goats just to be on the safe side?
I'm worried that this could cause everyone to have problems because it's so wet out and they are sticking together in the barn.

What would you change about this plan? Anything more I should do?

Timothy pellets shouldn't cause too much trouble. Probiotics and Tummy Tamer will help sooth her tummy. I'll list that recipe below. Only deqorm if they show a need such as poor famacha, poor coat, weight loss, fecal, ect.

Tummy tamer
1 teaspoon each
Cayenne pepper
Ginger
Slippery elm
Cinnamon
Acv
Molasses
20 to 30 cc water..blend smooth with 1-2 fresh raw garlic cloves and drench.
Can be give 2 to 4 times a day.

I've seen this several places and every time I think where do you get slippery elm whatever that is.
Feed only hay/pellets and no grains, plenty of water plus an additional offering of electrolytes until the scours clear up. Sort of a goat version of bland foods to help soothe the digestive tract.

I order Slippery elm from mountain rose herbs but you can get in capsules at a pharmacy and break them open to use.

That's what I thought the first day. I was like NBD it's because she ate a bunch of pellets everyones poo was a little "wet" that night. But now we're on day 3 and I she's still got scours.

Try giving her spectogard to at least stop the runs while you attempt to get her rumen right.
It is great stuff.

Is she current on her CDT?
I‘d give CD Antitoxin.

She is current (we dose early winter so she's less than 2 months from her booster).

Try flat dark beer to settle her rumen ....couldn’t hurt.
