Pellets for bottle babies

578 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Piddlepupp
I havevthree ND goats all ages 3-4 months. Two were bottle babies, other raised with mom. Older two are on straight hay, water, pellets. Young one still getting One bottle. How much pellets should I be feeding? Free choice? Using Purina goat grow. Recommend pellets?
Other food suggestions?

Are these bucks or does?
Growing kids of any gender should have quality hay, alfalfa and 14-16% protien pellet or feed. Checknthe bag to be sure the calcium and phosphorus ratio is at least 2:1
Feed should be about 5% of their body weight. Try that amount and see how they do. If they don't seem to be growing or look thin..increase slowly. Don't forget a quality loose mineral.

Purina Goat Grower is a good feed. We give it to ours, and yes it does have a balanced calcium:phosphorus ration. 16% protein so it will work well. Sorry I honestly can’t remember what we fed ours at that age, about a half cup or so I think...

Thank you.

I am feeding 1/2 cup in the morning. Offer hay and water freely. Now the two bottle kids (weaned) seem to eat until they look as if they are a round ball and their left side, rumen is bloated. I don't have as drastic problem with my third guy. He gets a little distended on the left but nothing like the other. two. No worms, normal poops. Normal activity level

If the rumen is big after eating, it's just full, not bloated. If they were bloated, they would be in pain. A big rumen is a happy rumen and makes for a healthy goat.

Thank you!!

They are still acting fine, growing, and normal bm's.

They will eat until they can barely move, lol. I have a wall feeder that holds a fleck of hay, currently feeding a mix of alfalfa and teff. They will stay at the feeder until it is about gone.. I am still feeding 1/2 Cup of the purina grow goat pellets in the morning. They hay was being offered for eating through out the day - or so I thought along with fresh water.
Are they eating too much?
They are probably eating too much hay. Creep feed is supposed to be free choice with a small limited amount of hay offered with it.
Quality protein feed grows a healthy rumen.
Roughage just grows a big rumen.

The difference is in how many cilia they grow while young.
I don't like the look of animals that have to eat pounds and pounds of dry roughage to get anything from it. So, odd one out I guess, I build cilia before size.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am working on less hay! Thank you again!
