Pellets or cubes to supplement?

378 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Mike at Capra Vista
We're unfortunately in exceptional draught conditions so my pastures not gonna make it much longer and what's there isn't great. I'm thinking of supplementing with pellets or cubes but not sure which is best? They'll still have some pasture they've got a couple small sections I haven't put them in yet and I'll start cutting them some tree branches soon as well. I haven't been able to find hay in the area ( our trucks broke down so We'd have to use the husband's work truck so we have to stay in the area)

The cubes you would probably have to break up. Have you looked into chaffhaye?

I have it's about a 2 1/2 hour trip to get some. I don't have time to make it at the moment but it's my backup if I can't find Bale's
Pellets but they really need the long fibers from hay, at least a few times a week.

The pasture they still have will be the long fiber :)

The goats like the pellets but they love the cubes if you break them up. My husband spent over an hour breaking cubes into smaller chunks for them. The goats went crazy for them and I think he made some friends 😂. Thinking I might see if I can track down some mini cubes for the winter to supplement whatever hay I can find.

Aren't pellets and cubes essentially the same product only a different shape/size??

The pellets are pulverized so basically compressed dust while the cubes are compressed but aren't pulverized so more like compressed little Bale's of hay which I think they prefer :)
That makes sense. Thanks for that.
I've been feeding pellets for years. My goats are so fussy that sometimes when I open a new bag (same brand) they will not eat the pellets. I guess the alfalfa originating from a different area must smell different or something.
