So we are getting 3 piglets - york/hamp crosses I believe is what they are. Anyway they asked if I wanted one to be female so if I want to breed for more meat.

    Here is my questions

    - how old do they have to be before breeding?
    - what breed should she be bred to?
    - what is gestation?
    - is it better to AI or take her to be covered?

Also on the ones we are going to butcher - they were born Nov 2nd and will be here mid december - should I be giving them any vaccines or wormers?

our school bred gilts to farrow at a year, so 9 months roughly?

i guess whatever breed you want

i was told gestation is 3 months and 3weeks and 3 days..

    no idea

I'd worm them at 2months and 3 months with ivomectin

The guy I farmsit for does what Sarah said. He has them castrated, teeth clipped, wormed 1x and vaccines already done by the time they're weaned.

All pigs have "tusk like" teeth, they are normally clipped as babies as they do use them as weapons, especially at feeding time....wether it be from mom or from a pan.
I've raised piglets from a week old on a thin mixture of goats milk and rice cereal for babies, the added iron in the cereal helps the piglets maintain normal blood levels as they can become anemic.
Sarah is right, gestation is just about 4 months. The farmer I got my piglets from waits to breed until the gilts are 9 months old.

yes, they're called wolf teeth, they have 4 at birth, we just used finger nail clippers and clipped them as they came out

it's WAY safer to AI, and it's easy. My sow was killed by an overly aggressive boar

    gestation is 114 days

We breed our meat pigs at about 9 months, when they reach a good size.

We breed to other meat pigs, so any of the meaty breeds you like.

Gestation is what sarah said, 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days exactly.

We have never done AI, but some breeders here have done it alot. Depends on the boy.
