Pneumonia

I have read this before and can’t it in the search. Last night Sandy had twins. Must have been earlier part of night because when I dipped the naval cords this morning around 8:30am, the cords where already drying up. The babies were fine when I left. I think I remember them musing. This evening one is almost motionless and cold. I grabbed her up and put under my jacket and finished feeding. I carried her home and placed her in a big mineral tub with a goat blanket to lay on and a goat blanket on top of her. I installed a heat lamp about 2-1/2-3ft over her and gave her a little less than a half ml of Nuflor. She was resting when I left her. I have her in my wood shop out of the wind. It has been raining and low 40’s for the high yesterday and today. Rain has fell both days making it very tough on any goat, much less on babies. Any thing else for protocol please reply as I going to copy any paste in my notes. Thanks

I don’t think at this age that cocci would be a problem yet? Do you?

A cold baby is usually a hungry baby. Did you make sure that she’s gotten colostrum and has a good suck reflex? Did you check mom to make sure her teats were not plugged or blocked?
Exceede is what’s good for pneumonia. It’s RX though.
Id make sure she’s eating before grabbing meds though.

Might be good to contact a vet and get a prescription!
No coccidia for a newborn.

There’s no vet to contact here. The one that did it retired. The new vet is mouse and car chasers. (Cats & dogs) Her tongue is cold and she has been under heat lamp for an hour. She just lays there with her mouth open and her eyes open. I got a little milk from mom about 50 minutes or so. I lowered the heat lamp a little to help get her temp up some before I try to get me in her.

Oh no we lost one this spring that was like that! I hope she/he pulls through for you .... so sad wouldn't they prescribe an antibiotic for you? Worth a try!

Put baby in a plastic bag then in a very warm bath.... be sure to take temp before and every 10 minutes so not to over heat. Need to warm her before feeding.

I have been out in the shop with my blow gun. It’s warming her up but I have to keep it at a good distance from her and my other hand on her rubbing her. She is now back in her tub with the heat lamp. She has a little more movement than she did when I started to work with her. Her tongue is still cold but not as cold as it was. I’m checking on her every 20 minutes or so.

Rub her gums with a little cayenne pepper in honey every 15 minutes or so. Will warm her up and give energy

I don't know how hot your blow gun is. The method I have used is with a hair dryer. Make a tent out of a towel, and put baby in with just the head sticking out. Blow the hair dryer into the tent, but not directly on baby. You're just warming the air around the baby. It works pretty quickly.
I would also give b complex. I hope the kid pulls through for you!

Just came in from checking on her. She passed away. This weather we are having is pneumonia weather. It’s 40 degrees out right now and has rained off and on all day and same last night. Monday we had full sunshine and 70 degree day and 42 degree night. The roller coaster weather is tough on livestock.

I know somebody who does kind of the same as you do. She puts the baby or animal (she does it on all sorts of animals) in a plastic bin/tub with a towel over it and she uses a hair dryer and blows it in the bin/tub the animal is in and she has saved tons of animals that looked hopeless and she said it never has not worked.
I have never tried it before (and hope I will not need to) but I have heard great results.
Good luck! ♡

Very sorry you lost her.
So sad, it is always heart breaking when you lose one. :(
That is so sad. I hope luck is turning around for you and your goats now, and that all the others will have healthy deliveries and strong healthy kids!
Sorry you lost her! Hope the other kid remains healthy!
