We bred a group of first freshener saanen mix does in early March (we bred them all last year but it didn’t take due to a copper deficiency with both the buck and does). Unlike last year, this time almost all of them grew little udders the week after breeding. One of those went back to normal after a few weeks, two still have one sided udders, and one has just steadily grown ever since. Often when I go out in the morning she is fast asleep in a pool of milk. Has anyone had their girls begin to lactate so early in the pregnancy? We’ve had goats for 6 or 7 years and never seen it.

Here she is several weeks ago. Her udder is about twice that size how. She’s never freshened. Her mom was a 2.25 liter/day saanen and her paternal grandmother was a mutt, only 1 liter/day so I don’t think it’s because she has heavy milking genetics. She’s due August 1.

We usually keep 2 fences between our bucks and does, so not impossible but also unlikely. Her belly is only barely bigger than it usually looks when she’s not pregnant, though we one had a doe who didn’t have a noticeable belly the day before giving birth to triplets.
