We just purchased a pregnant boer doe a few months ago and recently we have noticed that she has had some trouble eating grain and hay. She is due in January and is getting about 1 pound of 16 percent grower each evening. What she does is she eats normally for a little bit, and then acts as if she is choking. She will grind her teeth, make grunting noises and spit. Then she just stands there for a little bit and will go back to eating. Does anyone have any ideas?
Be careful, if they go off feed the can get toxemia. Check her urine if she goes completely off food. Just went through that and it not fun st all. You can check urine with strips from Walmart.
She is having trouble eating hay and grain, but she is still eating. She will eat a little bit, then make some grunting noises and spit foam. Then, she stands there for a little while and goes back to eating again.
check her teeth to be sure they are sound...dont stick you fingers in there with out placing an object to keep her from biting down...her back teeth are like razors...use large stringe to stick betweenthe teeth....
if all is clear, be sure there is not something lodged in her throat...use a flexable tube to push down her throat gently and slowly...this will dislodge anything (hopefully) that might be stuck....give her a rest for 30 minutes or so and feed her a little grain...see if she has improved...if sheis still choking...I would seek a vet to have a look down her throat to be sure there is not a growth preventing her from swallowing well...
Yup, what Happybleats said. I'd check her teeth. DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS IN HER MOUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I use a miniature horse curb bit to open the mouth and hold it open while I examine their teeth.
