Pygmy Buck to Nigerian Does

1292 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Lil Boogie
Hi! I’ve read that Nigerian Dwarf have difficulties birthing when their kids are too big .

Has anyone bred a Pygmy Buck to a ND?

is this possible since pygmy’s are smaller?

thanks!

As long as your doe isn't unusually small, pygmy to nigi would not be an issue since they are both mini breeds

Pygmy goats are considered a meat breed and Nigerian Dwarf goats are considered a dairy breed. There really isn't much size difference. Are you considering a Pygmy because you think he is smaller or because you want to cross the two breeds?

I wouldn't say pygmies are smaller. I have had pygmies and nigerians, but not at the same time. The pygmies might be slightly shorter than most of my nigerians, but they were much wider, stockier, and heavy-boned. There shouldn't be a problem crossing the two, although I'm not sure why you'd want to.

There is no issue at all with doing that. If I were you and I had Nigerian does, id just get a Nigerian Buck.

I'd just make sure the Nigerian doe was wide enough in the back end to allow a larger kid to pass, as Pygmies are wider than Nigerians. Think Boers Vs. Nubians.

Ive done it before and juat made sure I had a wide doe. I have had 0 problems.
And yes this cross makes pretty meaty kids. You have to select the meatyest doe you have.
