Anna has REALLY dropped back in milk production. From 2.5L a day to 1.4L.

It just occurred to me that it has slowly been dropping down for about 8 weeks - and she is about 8 weeks pregnant.

Is it possibly that she's putting all her nutrition and energy into growing this pregnancy, instead of making milk?

Yes she is being milked twice a day.

The feed I give them ... the formula is

    500g for maintenance
    500g for pregnancy
500g for every litre of milk produced

So she was getting 1.75kg of feed when she was milking 2.5L and empty.

Just before joining I add in the pregnancy 500g to flush them. So then from joining onwards she was getting 2.25kg.

When she started dropping back on milk yield, I left her on the higher feed for a little while hoping to increase the milk again. But since it hasnt, I've put her onto the 'correct' ration for her production level, so thats back to 1.75kg.

FWIW my feed is 50% lucerne chaff, 16% bran, 16% oats, 16% lupins, 2% vitamin/mineral premix with molasses. She also has free choice wheaten hay and a variety of free choice loose minerals.

has she ever been milked through like this or always dried off when pregnant? If she was always dried off her body just adjusts as it is use to.

I'm not sure what the previous owner did, but generally its common practice here to milk through until 4 - 6 weeks before kidding for roughly a 300 day lactation. She's only up to about 200, which is disappointing.

I would always give a doe at least 2 months before kidding to recouperate without being milked.

Therefore I dry up my does in the 3rd month of gestation.
