I took Steve Galchutt's idea and mounted a simple snapshot camera (which also records video) on the end of a 8' piece of lightweight pipe. I bent the pipe to minimize the amount of pipe that is in the camera's field of view. See my first field test here
I learned from this that:
- It is easy to move the camera during shooting, to create interesting live panning effects.
- It seems to actually stabilize the camera. It is easy to hold it steady enough even when walking.
- If you just hold the pipe at different points you can adapt the zoom effect on yourself.
- By holding the boom so the camera is from behind it looks like someone is walking behind you with a camera.
This is a fun gadget!
