Removing vinegar smell after using dehorning paste

567 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Goats Rock
Hello, this is my first post and I may be in the wrong section, so I apologize.
I was reading up on all the routines people use when using dehorning paste to disbud their kids here . I just finished with my very first two bucklings and I think it went pretty well! The problem is that one of my does won’t take the buckling back and I thinks it’s because of the vinegar smell from deactivating the paste… I took him back out of the pen and wiped his head down even more, but it didn’t seem to help and I’m not sure what else I can do. Any friendly advice is much appreciated. Thank you!!

*** if you disagree with my method of disbudding, I respectfully ask that you don’t address that here. Thanks so much :)

Did you reintroduce the baby backside first so she could smell his behind before his head?
Some folks have used things like vet RX or Vick’s vapor rub in/on the does nose then also on baby so they smell alike. You can let baby nurse on the milk stand then put him with mom.

I had a doe reject on after disbudding and she never took baby back and I had a bottle baby because of it. It does happen. Is momma a FF? I think that sometimes has something to do with it.

Thank you so much! No, I did not think to introduce backside first. She seemed ok with that end, but not his head. I’ll put her on the stand and try that next.

She is not a fist freshener, this is her 3rd, but she does have a history of rejection. Great feedback, I really appreciate it!

Yep, keep introducing the back end first! (glad we don't have to do that when we meet new people!).
As the vinegar fades, she should be ok. (fingers crossed!)
