Retained Placenta day 4 and broken bone??

449 Views 33 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
Need help! Boer 4 yr old doe retained the placenta. Selenium deficiency in the twins but not sever. corrected w 1/2 cc BOSE. ( I have selenium antagonists in soil and water and give to all 4 x a year + Minerals and still have copper and sel issues.)

She also is super stressed with possible broken pelvis, or ? She fell in the ice I think and was limping for two months but got better . I thought she had sprained something and recovered. 4 weeks before kidding she was down again. Maybe another doe hit her. Penned her and she laid around eating but in pain. When she kidded, I assisted and could hear up past tail to top of hip bad sound like somethings broken. Does not move tail.

No placenta after 15 hrs . Vet said 2cc lutalyse and I have her on antibiotic bio mycin daily.

4 days and Still has not released it and I cannot get a vet here to help, called every vet ( 3 )and they are so overloaded cause so many people moved here during the pandemic.

Only one was willing to help over phone he said to the receptionist who relayed it to me give oxytosin every day till it is out, plus anti biotics AND not to give lutalyse that the other vet sold to me.

I dont have any oxytosin....Missoula 2 hour drive each way and I have another doe in labor. The local vet is deciding if they will sell me some. Waiting on a call back.

Freakin out here....

1) I heard you CANNOT give oxytosin once the uterus has closed or it could burst it?
2. Is Estrumate the same thing as lutalyse? Just name brand

3. Is a uterine flush a thing?

4. Banamine does it help this process or hinder? One source said it stops contractions? I want to ease her pain but also want the rotting placenta out.

5. She is not eating much, I flavor water for her she is drinking and eating small amounts. She gets up to nurse babies and I am also bottle feeding them.
Yesterday she walked/gimped out of her stall to stand with a few other goats and kids.

I am trying to save her life, get the placenta out and see if she can recover.

At a loss as to how I can help her.

ANY suggestions ?

The cervix needs to be open to do a uterine flush. I can't see oxytocin working at this point. You might want to try penicillin and either lute or estrumate. Since your doe has a retained placenta, I would do a 14 day course of penicillin. But on days 4 & 5 of penicillin, give one shot of lute. So that would be 2 days in a row of lute. Hopefully that would help to expel what is in the uterus. The penicillin needs to be the twice a day type. You need a constant level of penicillin through this.

I am currently using Bio Mycin which is non sting oxytetracycline it is long lasting and used daily.
What is a benefit of penicillin over Oxytet?
Do you know if Banamine help?

Also give her Seleniun/ Vit paste. If the twins were defecient, so is she. It will help her release the placenta.

Penicillin works better on the uterus. Banamine is for pain and inflammation. It also has anti-abortive properties. So I would not be giving lute and banamine at the same time.

Our vet said Pen-G was best for placenta trouble too when I asked if we should try something else. Several people told me that oxytocin won't do anything by the time a retained placenta becomes worrisome and I believe that. Try not to stress about that. I've heard of placentas being delivered 5 days post and everything ends okay. It can happen.

Boost her immune system, keep her with plenty of calcium and Se.

Do you have any comfrey? A common name is knit-bone because it's so good at healing. Have you reached in to see if her cervix is still open at all (or manually tried to open it)? If there's anything hanging out you can give the slightest of gentle pulls to help it along, especially if other options are limited. Or tie a baggie with a little water to weigh it down, to any exposed membranes.

thank you for the ideas.

Nothing hanging out ...was hanging but broke off short and I think went inside.

No I have not tried to see if cervix is still open. Maybe should cause there is also NO drainage

I checked to be sure no kids left in there at kidding because she kept pushing or was trying to pass placenta

Deep breath! A retained placenta is not a death sentence. It does increase the risk of infection but your covering that so try not to freak out.
Do know though that there is mixed information about biomycin (OXYTETRACYCLINE) causing penicillin to be less effective. So when you start her on penicillin keep a eye on her and if it’s not cutting it you may have to get another antibiotic from a vet that is stronger. As gross as it sounds it’s the smell you want to keep a eye on. If infected it will have a deathly smell, like spoiled meat and some nasty discharge.
You also are correct that oxy should NEVER be given when the cervix is closed so good call there!
Have you had a vet check her hips out? Not eating or drinking well may have nothing to do with the retainer placenta and her hips hurting. If not broken and just sore you may need some banamine to help with pain.

I do it all the time and it hasn't caused any trouble. I think with the penicillin she will be ok from the retained placenta as it has worked for me in several similar situations. I don't know what to tell you about her pelvis, that sounds rather scarry. I hope she will be ok.

Selenium deficiency can make them hold it. Have you given her any?

She is doing ... I gave a second lute shot more antibiotics
this am. A little bloody watery discharge is starting to come out.
Trying to find penicillin tomorrow. Thought it did not work well anymore

Yes Gave selenium by Bose and am giving daily vit/mineral slurry I made.
She is eating small amounts of leaves and grass watermelon celery and carrots but will not eat goat chow or alfalfa.

She came out of her stall today to see whats happening because two more does kidded.

Both normal, a single and a first timer who had triplets, a buckling I pulled and two doelings. Weak legs on the last one. 1/2 cc Bose each.
Now waiting on plactenta out of this one a few hours ago.

The new kids are adorable! It sounds like she is doing pretty well all things considered. That seems good that she is starting to pass something. I have successfully treated retained placentas with Bio Mycin before so if you cant get penicillin or if it seems to be doing a good job than I would stick with it. I don't know how long you intend to keep her on it but I usually go for 7-10 days when it is for a retained placenta. I do hope the other one passes hers for you.

Since she is flushing out some gunk..a flush would not hurt. I would mix very warm water with vinegar 50/50 and add a quality brand of lavender and tea tree essential oil if you have it about 10 drops each. Use a new sterile squeeze bottle or syringe, turkey baster..what ever you have on hand to get the fluid up there.

Best wishes

I’m glad she seems to have some improvement for you with discharge starting. Flushing would be a good idea!
Congratulations on the new arrivals 🥰
