Ok, I have wormed all my dogs with Valbazen wormer many times before, vet gave me the ok and other breeders, goat breeders that is says they have always wormed their dogs with Valbazen. Well, I have a new puppy who came from a litter of puppies that dident get the best care, healthy looking but never wormed or shots or anything and were fed VERY cheap adult dog food, like a 50lb bag cost $6, very very cheap. Well she got here and got great food and her shots and everything, then I remebered I never wormed her, so 2 days ago I gave her valbazen along with my other dogs. Everyone is fine except her, she sleeps in my room with me at night and she had an accident last night, got up to clean it up and in her poo she had some of the biggest tape worms I have EVER seen, and I mean they were freakin huge!!! And the gross part about it, they were still moving!!!!!! So I know the poor baby has a major infestation, color is good and she is hydrated, I can pull the scuff of her neck up and snaps back fine. She does not have an appatite right now and she is throwing up, not alot but when she eats she throws it back up........ Now this girl is a chow hound, so her not eating is some red flags. I offered her some sandwhich meat ( oven turkey) and she liked that, but after 30 minutes she threw it back up. WHat should I do!

Well the vet is closed now, she will be ok in the morning, she is looking like she is a little bit more alert, so I am thinking that she just had a massive infestation of them and as they die it is making her sick, but since her color and temp and she is drinking her water and isent dehydrated I think she just has a bad upset stomach from it. I will call my vet in the morning and he will help me over the phone or make me get some medicine off of him lol. What about stuff like red cell, or pepto bismal, anything you think I should give her to just help keep her up and going and something to sooth the stomach?

My poodle Tyson got sick like that several times, even throwing up blood. We have stopped giving him any "chewies" like rawhide or fake bones. And he does not get any pork, he is ne ver sick anymore. I would say her body is getting rid of the parasites and worms. I hope she is her normal puppy self soon!

Are you sure that they are tapes and not rounds.

If they were tapes you would see small rice around the rectum also. The adult tapes are usually an off white and long and flat. They are segmented.

Round worms look like speghetti and they are off whit as well. This is the most common worm found in puppies. Typically the mother was infested and they were transferred transplacental. Strongid is a wonderful medication for rounds and very cheap. The pet, if heavily infested can go into a small "shock" to the system when given the first dose. If it is rounds, you will want to treat all the dogs and cats and repeat in 14 days and then again in 14 days. The medication only kills adult rounds, and not the eggs, so to treat every 14 days will kill the worms as the eggs hatch and before they are able to reproduce.

Hope this helps!

It is very common in puppies that come from bad places or places that the owners are unaware to be "loaded" with rounds as we used to call it in the vet clinic!

Make sure you go to the vet and get STRONGID and repeat 3-4 times every 14 days in every cat and dog that you have on the property! That is the only way that you will be able to kill the parasites!

My luna had them so bad when I got her at 5 weeks that they were as long as her little body! She got really lathargic also - and it was because it was a shock to her system to have them die off and leave her body. You will notice a nicer coat - solid stools - and an appetite where the pup is gaining weight appropriately in no time!

PS Tapes are caused by swollowing a flea!

Well everyone here has been on a worming schedule, and I have 2 indoor cats. But since the other dogs are on worming schedules should I give everyone wormer every 14 days or just the puppy?
