A Western Fox Snake (locally called a Pine Snake) was a welcome visitor here, this morning! They are harmless snakes, and eat mice. This one wasn't snappy at all. In fact, it was very mellow and got passed around to some friends who are staying over. After few quick photos, I brought the snake back to the field it was found in.

Very pretty critter. They have beautiful checkerboard tummies. Their main defense mechanism is to shake their tails against the grass, trying to sound like a rattlesnake. But it didn't fool me!
