Whether with Urinary Calculi

Hi all my 9 year old boy is having issues with stones. He was seen by a vet a couple of months ago and she diagnosed him with urinary calculi. She cut off his pizzel and treated him with antibiotics, pain med and put in a catheter. He started urinating and feeling better in a couple of days. He continued doing well for a while but unfortunately started having trouble urinating again. He only drips and sometimes he makes a grunting noise. I started drenching him with AC everyday and even treated him with the red onion, garlic and lemon juice remedy for four days and nothing seems to help. He eats Timothy and Orchard hay and has a little of Purina feed and Sweetlix minerals. We have well water and I am starting to think this might be the problem….not sure. The vet that treated him is very caring but unfortunately not a goat vet….she is a horse vet. We don’t have any goat vets around our area. She told me that she was afraid to do the catheter again because goats don’t do well under anesthesia. I am very concerned. I don’t want to lose my sweet Harry. He is a wonderful boy. I would be so grateful for and advice. Thanks

Oh no. I'm sorry he's having issue. You can try very warm compresses and massaging the sheath to help break stones up but if he can't pee he will need emergency care. I'm so so sorry he's struggling. Get that vet on the phone..

You will probably need to get him on a diet that includes ammonium chloride... o hope the boy pulls through this! Ammonium chloride is in some feeds but is sold so that you can add it to any feed as well! It would be up to you to switch or add it to his regular portion of purina!

I agree, a vet would be good.

Id start high doses of vitamin c. You can use chewable tablets. Do you have a state vet college? You might could call them to advise your vet. UC is painful, do you have banamine? I’d give him a dose it’ll also help his urethra relax and with the ac, warm compresses and banamine on board he might be able to pee a bit better.
your best bet though is finding a vet
i wish you and him the best.

Thank you all for your advice. I am going to start on vitamin C today and call the vet. I have drenched him with ammonium chloride and it didn’t seem to work. I keep thinking is the well water. I just read that there are two types of stones magnesium ammonium phosphate stones and calcium oxalate stones. The calcium oxalate stones are due to well water. I don’t have banamine but the vet had mentioned that I can also give him children’s ibuprofen which I do have. Regardless I will call her again. Does anyone think putting in the catheter again will help? The vet said she was afraid because of the anesthesia involved.

The vet is correct to say goats don't do well going under...catheter will give him relief but it's not a fix.
I would ask for the bananine. It's more effective then oral medication. 1 cc per 100# sub q is dose. And if you can get him that along with the very warm compresses and massaging that may help get relief. Keep with the AC ....vit c is good too. Try to give as little liquid as possible as you don't want to fill his bladder.
He may need remodeling surgery to fix the issue. While out side factors such as diet. Well water ect are often main cause, genetics and breed can play a role as well.
Be sure he does not have access to baking soda as that can deactivate the AC.

Thank you all. I have put a call in for the vet to try and get some bananine. I did give him some children’s ibuprofen earlier and vitamin C (5000 mg). He is still dripping but eating and walking around. I’ll keep you guys posted.

As long as he's dripping there's hope. Try the hot compresses and massaging the sheath while you wait for the vet to get back with you.

If you are able to get a sample of the stones. Test them. So you know what kind he's dealing with

The vet is out of town but will be here tomorrow. I’ll see her and see what she thinks. Today he is trying but nothing comes out. The same thing happened a few days ago and then he started dripping again. Should I continue with vitamin C and children’s ibuprofen? I give 5000 mg of C and 6 ccs of ibuprofen twice a day.
The vit c u would continue with. Does the ibuprofen seem to help? I would give it to him with in 24 hours of the vet coming in case he wants to give somthing else.
Have you tried warm compresses presses and massaging the sheath?

The vet got back today thank goodness. She sent me Melixicam for 5 days. When I got home tonight he was laying down and when he got up he was soaked. He started dripping again right before I put him in his pen. Apparently the vitamin C worked because he wasn’t peeing this morning. The vet told me to continue with ac….I had stopped and was giving him the vitamin C. Don’t know if I should continue with the C or start with ac. Any suggestions? I do massage the sheath every day….few times a day. I haven’t tried the warm compresses. I will try tomorrow. Thank you all for your wonderful advice. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

I’d do both. Be careful meloxicam is hard on the rumen. Make sure he eats and give probios to keep it healthy.

I agree.
So yesterday Harry seemed a little better. He was dripping and was walking around and ate some hay. This morning he is not looking so good. He is still dripping but I noticed he is shivering a bit. He wanted to eat some pepper hedge and I gave him some and he ate it. He is now laying down. I gave him the vitamin C and AC last night along with Melixicam. I just don’t know what else to do for him. I love him so but I’m afraid he might not come out of this
