Wolly croton??

863 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Cedarwinds Farm
We have a lot of woolly croton on our property and from what I’ve read it is poisonous.... and yet our goats devour it and have no symptoms.... is this actually poisonous or have I read wrong? Do I need to remove it? Why aren’t they showing any symptoms? I’m so confused....

And yet my goats aren’t sick.....
To be honest in excess it will be toxic. Some animals are imune because of exposure.... it could be that they are just not eating enough of it to warrent a reaction?

I hadn’t thought about that... They don’t eat very much but they do seem to love it.
I have that growing in some of my pastures, too. By and large, the goats leave it alone. I have seen a few plants with bites taken out. I don't worry, as long as they have plenty of other things to eat. This is the time of year to begin really keeping an eye on pasture raised goats, though. Some forages are beginning to die back, and they may become hungry and pushed to eating things that aren't so good for them. Other forages lose a lot of their nutritional value in late summer and early fall, so though the goats may eat them, they are not getting all they need. I have begun offering hay to all of my goats, so they have an alternate food source if they aren't getting enough from the pasture.
