My brother in law has started doing an awful lot of carpentry and has massive bags of wood shavings that he doesnt want... they're teak, white oak, and cedar, mostly.

Are any of them ok for bedding? Would you use just shavings or straw on top? Or what...?

I use shavings for bedding and it works really well for keeping things dry. Its a whole lot easier to clean up too. Depending on how much you have, you could use it alone or if not that much, under the straw.
