I have a 4 month old buckling who I am wanting to train as a cart goat. I’ve already been working him in the halter and plan on starting weight training when he’s a year old. I more curious of how long can i walk him. I also ride in a cart pulled by my pony and i want to start hooking him up and just bringing him along. Not attached to cart to pull but just to follow. I want to know how far can he walk/trot. Ponies can go for about 14 miles at a working trot but i rarely go more than about 1-1/2 miles at a walk. I don’t want to jeopardize his growth in any way but i want him to be used to everything he may encounter when we start driving. I have heard of people taking their pack goats on 5 mile runs at this age but i want to look more into it.

At 4 months old. No way. Walk him around a yard. But not trotting along side a cart.

Thats what we’ve been doing. I do it up and down the drive way just for about 15 min only at a walk. When could i start going longer distances? Nothing major just like 1/2 a mile and slowly build up as he gets older.

I would say at least over 6 months old. Around 8 months they seem more robust.
