pygmy house

this is the house we built for our two new baby pygmy goats... As you see its just built on top the grass... Should I put anything down on the ground other than straw ?

That is fine for summer/fall. In winter you will want to build up the straw bed. Sometimes I throw a little barn lime down to neutralize the ammonia smell. I use a pitchfork to toss the straw so the droppings go to the ground, then I just add a fresh top coat of straw. I do change the straw at least once a month or every three weeks if the odor gets too out of control! Looks like a nice pygmy barn!

My goats have developed a cough so I was using shaved pine shavings and then I switched to straw. They still had a cough and after talking to a vet he said I should go back to the wood shavings. Since they are out eating weeds, it seems to be a little better but they still have a cough when they run down the hill. I cut a new hole in our 6' x 10' goat barn and it is open on one end. Any suggestions?
